국문 초록

이 연구는 2014년 6월 제6회 지방선거 이후 실시된 여론조사 데이터를 분석하여 인터넷이 한국 정치과정에 어떠한 영향을 미치고 있는가를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 연구의 첫 번째 가설은 인터넷 사용이 태도극화를 심화시킨다는 것이다. 두 번째 가설은 이른바 변화가설(change hypothesis)을 확인하는 것으로, 한국 온라인 여론의 진보 우위 현상이 6회 지방선거에서도 확인되는가 하는 문제이다. 여론조사 데이터를 회귀분석한 결과, (1) 인터넷에서의 정치적 의사소통은 시민들의 기존 태도를 강화시킨다는 태도극화의 가설이 다시 확인되었고, (2) 한국의 온라인 여론은 아직까지는 보수정당에 비판적이라는 변화가설의 예측이 확인되었지만, 이러한 진보정당의 우위는 상당히 불안정하다는 결론을 얻을 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This research aims to see how the internet and new media influence the election and the political process in South Korea via an analysis of survey data that is collected after the 6th local elections in 2014. The first hypothesis is that usage of internet intensifies attitude polarization. The second hypothesis is to reconfirm ‘change hypothesis’ that maintains the liberal domination of online public opinion. With OLS analysis, this research concludes that (1) the communication over the internet does increase the attitude polarization, which is operationally defined as the difference in the evaluations between the most favored and the least favored political parties; and that (2) though the public opinion in Korean cyberspace is still against the Saenuri Party, the conservative ruling party of South Korea, this liberal superiority seems unstable.
