국문 초록

주자는 일생동안 “성현의 본의 추구(求聖賢本意)’를 학문 목표로 삼고, 성현의 경전에 의지하여 경전 텍스트에 대한 깊은 연구를 통해 경전의 원의를 파악해야 한다고 주장하였다. 쉬자싱[許家星] 교수의 『경학과 실리(經學與實理)』는 주자의 사서학에 대한 해설서로서, 주자 학문의 정수를 얻었고 주자의 학문 방식과 학술 정신에 대한 계승과 준수를 구현하였다. 이 책의 집필 특색은 주로 세 가지 측면에서 드러난다. 첫째, 이 책은 텍스트 분석을 중시하였고 문헌 고증을 상세하게 하였다. 저자는 사료고증 방면에서 매우 많은 노력을 들였는데, 우선 주자 사서학의 형성 과정의 저술들에 대해 상세히 고찰하여 이전의 혼동된 설명들을 바로잡았다. 그 다음 중국 성리학사에 논쟁이 많았던 문제들을 변석(辯析)하였다. 예를 들어 주자와 장식(張栻)이 쓴 「인설(仁說)」의 차이점을 분석한 것이 그것이다. 이 책은 또한 역동적인 각도에서 주자가 경전을 시기마다 다르게 해석했던 특징들을 고찰하면서, 주자 사상이 여러 차례 굴절하고 반복하는 특징들과 “광대하게 넓히고 정밀함을 다하는”(致廣大而盡精微) 학술 정신을 강조하였다. 둘째, 이 책은 조술(祖述)의 과정에 창작의 뜻을 넣어 참신한 의미를 천명하였다(寓作于述，闡發新意). 저자는 이 책을 ‘주자를 조술하는 작품’으로 자리매김하였지만, 주자의 원의를 드러내는 과정에서 필연적으로 저자 자신의 창의성이 수반되었다. 「제2장 주자 도통론에 대한 새로운 논의(朱子道统说新论)」에는 저자의 창의적 견해가 매우 많이 포함되어 있다. 주자의 도통론에서 주렴계의 지위에 관한 학계의 논쟁에 대해 저자는 새로운 통로를 개척한다. 즉 저자는 『대학중용장구』 「서문」과 『사서』의 제한에서 벗어나 더 넓은 시각으로 주자의 도통세계를 다루고 주자의 토통론이 『사서』의 계보와 『태극도설』의 계보 두 노선에서 공동으로 조성된 것이라고 주장한다. 전자는 공부론을 대표하고 후자는 본체론을 강조하는 것으로, 이 두 노선은 충돌없이 병행하고 서로 관통한다. 이와 같이 본체론과 공부론의 두 층면에서 주자의 도통설을 논의하고 있는 저자의 새로운 주장은 우리가 주자의 도통설을 이해하는 데 새로운 해석의 시각을 제공해준다. 세번째, 문제 중심으로 접근하면서 드넓은 학술사적 시각을 갖추고 있다. 집필 방법에 있어 저자는 문제 분석법을 채용하여 주자가 비교적 집중했던 의제들에 대해 중점적으로 논구하고, 주자를 중심으로 사상사의 각도에서 역대 유가의 핵심 도덕문제에 대한 주요 관점들을 토론하였다. 이 서평에서는 이 책 제3장 제3절의 ‘관중형(管仲型) 문제’에 관한 토론을 사례로 분석하였다. 이렇게 문제 중심의 깊고 전면적인 고찰을 통해 우리는 분명하게, 주자의 사상이 두서 없고 비체계적인 게 아니라 복잡한 사상의 내원과 굴절을 가진 사유의 노정이었으며, 이전 사상들을 흡수하고 비판하는 기초 위에서 진행한 이론적 창조였다는 것을 이해할 수 있다. 이 책은 체계가 방대하고 사유가 정밀하지만 아쉬운 부분도 없지 않다. 예를 들어 주자가 『사서장구』에서 불교와 노장을 비판한 사상에 대해서는 전문적으로 논구하지 않은 점이 그렇다.

영문 초록

Zhu Xi insisted that “pursuing real intentions of sages” was his academic goal throughout his life, and that Confucians should grasp the meanings through in-depth study of the texts in the scriptures, only relying on scriptures of sages. Professor Xu Jiaxing [许家星]'s Confucian Classics and Universal Principles is an explanatory book on Zhu Xi’s Commentaries of the Four Books（四书集注）, and it embodies the inheritance and compliance of Zhu Xi's academic style and spirit by obtaining the essence of Zhu Xi's studies well. The writing characteristics of this book are mainly revealed in three aspects. First, text analysis was emphasized extremely and literary warrant was so detailed. This book took a great deal of effort in the field of historical research, and first of all, it reviewed the process of establishing Zhu Xi’s Commentaries of the Four Books in detail, thereby rectified the previous confusing explanations about them. Then, this book analyzed the issues that were often controversial in the history of Chinese Neo-Confucianism. For example, it distinguished the difference between two pieces of “Treatise on Ren”[仁說] written by Zhu Xi and Zhang Shi separately. This book also examined the characteristics of Zhu Xi's different interpretations of the scriptures from a dynamic perspective to each period, and highlighted the refracting and repeating characteristics of Zhu Xi's thought and his academic spirit of " reaching the breadth and greatness and penetrating the refined and subtle to the end" (致廣大而盡精微). Second, Zhu Xi embedded creativity in transmission(寓作于述), and then revealed the novel meaning impliedly. In the process of revealing Zhu Xi’s original meanings, the creativity of the author's own thoughts is also inevitably accompanied. Chapter 2 “A New Discussion on Zhu Xi’s view of the Way(朱子道统说新论)” contains a lot of creative views of the author. The author opens a new channel for the scholarly debate on the status of Zhou Dunyi(周敦颐) on Zhu Xi’s view of the Way. In other words, the author deals with Zhu Xi’s view of the Way from a broader perspective and argues that Zhu Xi’s view of the Way was jointly created in the two lines of the genealogy of Four Books and Taijitushuo(太极图说), breaking away from the limitations of “Preface” in Commentaries of the Four Books . The former represents the cultivation theory and the latter emphasizes metaphysics, and these two lines parallel and penetrate each other without conflict. In this way, a completely new argument that discusses Zhu Xi’s view of the Way in two dimensions, the cultivation theory and metaphysics, provides a new perspective of interpretation for us to understand Zhu Xi’s view of the Way. Third, it has a broad academic-historical perspective through problem-centered approaching. In the writing method, the author adopted a problem-centered analytic method to research the topics that the Zhu Xi focused on, and discussed the main viewpoints on the core moral issues of historical Confucianism from the angle of the history of thought, focusing on Zhu Xi. For instance, this review analyzed the discussion on the issue of Guan Zhong(管仲) style in Chapter 3, Section 3 of this book. Through this deep and comprehensive examination centered on this problem, we can clearly see that Zhu Xi's thoughts are not rambling and unsystematic, but rather a thought process with various origins and complex contemplations, and theoretical creation made on the basis of absorbing and criticizing previous philosophies. Although this book has a vast scale and precise reasons, it is not without its flaws.
