존 듀이의 『자유주의와 사회적 실천』에 나타난 자유주의의 본래적 가치와 지성의 교육적 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 오늘날 자유주의의 왜곡된 신념에 의한 폐해를 지혜롭게 극복하기 위해 초기 자유주의의 가치인 자유, 개별성, 지성의 의미를 듀이의 관점을 따라 탐구해보고, 그 과정을 통해 교육의 역할이 어떤 것인지 성찰해 보는 데 목적을 두었다. 듀이의 관점에서 자유주의는 고정불변하는 개인의 자연권을 상정함으로써 자유방임적 자유주의로 흐르며 기득권을 가진 소수가 다른 이들의 자유를 제한하는 모순적 한계를 갖는다. 그러나 듀이가 볼 때, 초기 자유주의가 추구한 자유, 개별성, 지성의 가치는 이상적 삶의 양식인 민주주의의 발전을 위한 토대로서 매우 중요한 것이다. 특히, 과학적 탐구와 사고의 방법으로서 지성은 자유주의의 가치들이 역사적 상대성에 의해 변화하며 적용될 수 있도록 하는 실천적 원리임을 확인하였다. 이를 통해, 학교는 실천적·사회적 지성을 싹틔우는 최적의 기관이며, 최후의 보루임을 인식하고 구성원 모두가 자유주의의 본질적 가치를 이해하고 그것을 삶에 확장해 나갈 수 있도록 하는 사상 기반 마련에 엄중한 사명감을 가져야 함을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of the values of early liberalism—freedom, individuality, and intelligence—from Dewey's point of view, in order to wisely overcome the evils caused by the distorted beliefs of liberalism, and to reflect on the role of education in the process. In Dewey's view, liberalism has drifted into laissez-faire liberalism by recognizing the natural rights of the individual as fixed and immutable, and has contradictory limitations such as the restriction of the freedom of others by a minority of capital and power. However, in Dewey's view, the values of freedom, individuality, and intelligence pursued by early liberalism are of great importance as the basis for the development of democracy as an ideal way of life. Particularly, intelligence, as a method of scientific inquiry and thought, has been affirmed as a practical principle that allows the values of liberalism to be changed and applied by historical relativity. Recognizing that the school is the optimal institution for the sprouting of this practical and social intelligence, and that it is the last bastion, it was discussed that all its members should understand the intrinsic value of liberalism and have a strong sense of dedication in laying the ideological foundations that enable them to extend it into their lives.
