자경성자(自警省者)로서의 교사

국문 초록

본 연구는 ‘안생(顔生)의 기미(驥尾)’ 같은 기회와 교도하여 주는 사우(師友)의 부재를 한탄하며 좋은 스승[良師]의 가르침을 간절히 염원했던 아정의 주장을 중심으로 오늘날 가르치는 자에게 요구되는 마음가짐과 자세를 탐색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 그는 모든 사람들이 평등하게 타고난 선한 본성을 발현하여 인간으로서의 도리를 다하도록 돕는 교육의 과정과 그 과정에서 가르치는 자의 자질과 역할이 무엇보다 중요함을 역설하였다. 특히 교육적 규범을 논한 「사소절」 서문에는 그 집필 동기를 ‘경성(警省)’, 즉 경계하고 반성하기 위함이라 하였다. 남을 깨우치고 풍속을 바로 잡기 전에 먼저 자기 스스로를 깨우치고[自砭], 자기 부인을 경계(警戒)하며, 자기 자녀들을 훈계(訓戒)하고자 했던 아정의 모습에서 가르치는 자의 마음가짐과 자세를 돌아보게 된다. 가르치는 자는 다음과 같은 물음들을 던지면서 먼저 자기 자신을 경계하고 반성해야[自警省] 할 것이다. 스스로 마음을 밝히고[明心] 몸을 다스리는가[律身]?, 가르침에 임해서 엄정함[嚴]과 너그러움[寬]이 균형 있게 조화를 이루는가?, 배우는 자가 다소 능숙하지 못하더라도 참음으로써 노여움을 견제하는가[耐恕]?, 가르침과 배움을 즐기고 결코 게을리하지 않는가[嗜勤]?, 겸손함으로써 교만함을 물리치는가? 행(行)을 돌아보면서 말[言]하고 말한 대로 행하는가? 이를 토대로 배우는 자로 하여금 인간으로서의 도리를 다하도록 끊임없이 경계하고 깨우치는[警省] 교사, 바로 아정이 바라던 이상적 교사상이라 하겠다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mindset and attitude required of today's teachers in the educational argument of Ah-jeong, who lamented that he had no teachers and friends to lead and valued the teaching of a good teacher above all else. He argued that the quality and role of the teacher are paramount in the process of education that helps reveal the good nature in which all people are equally born. Particularly, the preface to ‘Sasojeol(士小節)’, which discussed educational norms, said it was to be self-cautious and self-reflective on the intention for writing. His idea of being cautious and reflective himself, his wife, and his children before teaching others makes us reflect on the mindset and attitude of today’s teachers. First, are you cultivating your own mind and body? Does strictness and generosity harmonize teaching in a balanced manner? Do learners endure and forgive even if they are somewhat unskilled? Are you truly enjoying and diligent in teaching and learning? Do you act as you say, and look back on your actions? As you ask these questions, you will have to be self-cautious and self-reflective. Thus, it is the image of the ideal teacher that Ah-jeong wanted so much—one who constantly cautions and encourages the learner to fulfill their duty as a human being.
