국문 초록

‘수의 공간적 인지’(number-form)는 공감각(synesthesia)의 한 종류(숫자-공간 공감각, number-space synesthesia)로서 심안(mind’s eye)으로 공간 속에 분포된 숫자의 배열을 실재처럼 표상할 수 있는 능력을 일컫는다. 19세’기에 공감각 연구를 선도하였던 골턴(Francis Galton, 1822-1911)은 소수의 피실험자에 대한 연구를 근거로 생리학적 이론과 심리학적 이론으로 수의 공간적인지를 설명하였다. 그 이후 여러 연구자들이 집단 연구에 기초하여 수의 공간적인지를 주로 심리학적 이론에 근거하여 설명하였다. 본 논문에서는 베르나르(Claude Bernard, 1813-1878)의 절대적 결정론과 현상적 결정론의 구분에 따라서 19세기 공감각 이론이 물리화학적 환원주의로 완전하게 발전하지는 못하였지만 사변적인 심리학에서 벗어나 과학적인 심리학으로 수립되었음을 주장하고자 한다. 요컨대 생리학사에 대한 이러한 분석과 평가는 생명·의료윤리학에서 주목하는 연구윤리나 임상윤리의 문제를 넘어서 기초의학의 인식론적 문제를 탐구하는 미래 기초의학철학을 위한 시론이다.

영문 초록

‘Number-form’ is a kind of synesthesia that refers to a capacity of representing a sequence of numbers as entities in space by mind’s eye. Francis Galton(1822-1911) who led the research of synesthesia in the 19th century explained number-form on the basis of his studies on few test subjects and according to two oppositionary theories: the physiological theory and the psychological theory. After his studies, many other researchers who did group researches comprehended number-form mainly by the psychological theory. Depending on Claude Bernard(1813-1878)’s classification of absolute determinism and phenomenal determinism, this paper claims that 19th century theories of synesthesia had not been able to fully develop as a physico-chemical reductionism, nevertheless they had overcome speculative psychology to establish a scientific psychology. Consequently, this analysis and evaluation of such controversy in the history of physiology is an essay to promote future philosophy of basic medicine focusing on the epistemological problems beyond the problems of research ethics and clinical ethics.
