국문 초록

위약효과는 인류의 삶이 시작된 이래로 치유의 오랜 역사 속에서 항상 존재해 왔다. 각 시기별 의학의 시대적 상황에서 위약과 위약효과가 어떻게 이해되고 정의되었으며, 또한 어떻게 이용되고 실천되어 왔는가를 살펴보는 과정은 고스란히 의학의 역사를 반영하고 있다. 이글에서는 의학사의 흐름 속에서 변화해나가는 이들의 다양한 함의와 은유를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 통하여 의학에 대한 새로운 역사적 조망과 보다 완성도가 높은 의학을 실현해 가는데 일조하고자 한다. 의학의 역사를 살펴보면 특히 위약과 위약효과의 경우, 여러 대립적 요소들 사이의 활발한 변동이 두드러지게 나타나고 있다. 대표적으로 과학과 기예가 그러한 전형적 사례이다. 위약과 위약효과에 대한 역사적 변천사는 결국 의학 내에서 과학적인 측면과 기예적인 측면의 상호 역동적인 관계를 살펴보는 과정이다. 과학과 기예의 틀을 이용한 역사적 고찰 속에서 위약효과가 우리 인류에게 제공하는 여러 의미들을 논의하였다. 이러한 상충적 요소들 간에 위약효과가 어떠한 연결적인 교량 역할을 할 수 있는 가에 대해서도 고찰하였다.

영문 초록

The placebo effect has been always existed in the long history of healing since the beginning of lives of human races. To observe how placebo and placebo effects have been understood, defined, utilized, and practiced under the circumstances of each historical period of medicine reflects medical history as it is. This study attempted to investigate the various implications and metaphors of them changing forward in the historical flow of medicine. It is hoped that such processes could give a help to find new prospects of medicine and to realize the medicine with higher degree of completion. Especially placebo and placebo effects in the history of medicine manifests remarkably active changes between opposing factors. Representatively science and art is the typical case. The changing histories of placebo and placebo effects is eventually a process to examine the history of reciprocal dynamic relationships between the scientific and artistic aspects in medicine. Several meanings provided by the placebo effects to our human races were discussed in the historical considerations using the frame of science and art. This study also contemplated the possible role of placebo effects as a connective bridge between these conflicting factors.
