체화된 인지와 몸의 분류

국문 초록

우리는 모든 사물을 특정한 틀 속에 넣어 이해하고 설명하려는 원초적 본능을 가지고 있지만, 그 틀의 내용과 형식은 역사와 문화의 경험에 따라 큰 차이를 보인다. 서양 고대의 사체액설과 동아시아의 오행설은 인간 몸에 대한 서로 다른 분류체계의 전형적 사례들이다. 근대서양의학이 주류가 되면서 이 틀은 몸을 기계-전장-시장으로 보는 은유체계로 대체되었다. 이 은유는 사회문화적으로 격렬한 비판을 받고 있을 뿐 아니라 새로이 발견되고 있는 과학적 사실과도 어울리지 않는다는 주장이 상당하다. 하지만 아직 뚜렷한 대안은 없다. 이 논문은 정원-창(窓)-이야기꾼의 은유를 그 대안으로 제안한다. 이런 인문학적 제안의 기초 작업으로 먼저 분류 이론의 계보를 살펴본 다음, 이중 어떤 것이 최근의 과학(진화생물학, 인지과학, 면역학)이 제시하고 있는 새로운 생명의 설명방식과 잘 어울리는지 살펴본다. 주로 2세대 인지과학으로 불리는 체화된 인지의 설명법을 활용하되 진화생물학과 면역학의 통찰과 사례도 활용한다. 그 결론을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 1. 몸은 세계와의 상호작용 속에서 축적된 몸의 경험을 중심으로 분류된다. 2. 몸의 분류는 생물학적 사실에만 의존하지도 문화적으로만 결정되지도 않는다. 생물학적 사실과 문화적 현상은 구분 없이 몸속에 구현된다. 3. 은유는 이 둘을 이어주는 연결고리이다. 4. 참신한 은유는 생물-문화적 경험을 변화시키고 새로운 분류의 기반이 된다. 5. 기계-전장-시장의 은유를 정원-창(窓)-이야기꾼의 은유로 대체하면 몸을 전혀 다른 방식으로 분류할 수 있을 것이고, 몸과 의학의 건강에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

We are prone to comprehend things and matters using certain references we already have. And the references also vary according to historical and cultural experiences. Humoralism of the ancient West and Five Phase Theory of the East are the typical references according to which people classified their body structures and functions. It was not until the emergence of the scientific biomedicine that the millennia long classificatory systems has lost their strong footholds. After the introduction of biomedicine, the machine-battlefield-market metaphors have become the mainstream references in classifications of bodies. From the latter part of the last century, however, these metaphorical structures have been heavily criticized not only by cultural theorists but also by some leaders within biomedicine. As the alternatives to these, we propose new kinds of metaphors of garden, window, and storyteller. In order to make this point, we first look at the theories of classification and try to find appropriate one that fit well into the recent development of sciences. Mainly using the frame of embodiment and using examples and insights from evolutionary biology, cognitive sciences, and immunology, we have come to the following conclusions. 1. Bodies are classified according to the experiences accumulated in the body during the interaction with the world. 2. Body classification does not only depend on biological facts, neither is it only culturally determined. Biological facts and cultural phenomena are intertwined and embodied in the body without any distinctions. 3. Metaphors are important media through which biology and culture meet and interact producing meaningful experiences. 4. Novel metaphors change the nature of bio-cultural experience and become the foundation for new classifications. 5. If we could substitute the old machine-battlefield-market metaphors with the new garden-window-storyteller metaphors, we would have new references of body classification. Those metaphors in turn would contribute for the health both of our bodies and medicine itself.
