백제 주류성에 대한 최근의 인식 검토

국문 초록

백제사 연구에서 지속되고 있는 중요한 논쟁의 하나는 백제 부흥운동 의 주요 거점인 주류성의 위치에 대한 것이다. 이러한 가운데 최근에 들어와서 서천지역에 주류성이 있었다는 견해가 집중적으로 다시 제기 되고 있어 주목된다. 때문에 이러한 주장들이 얼마큼 설득력이 있는 근 거를 가지고 있는가를 알아볼 필요가 있다. 그러나 서천 주류성설에는 고고학적으로나, 문헌적으로나 여전히 검 토할 여지가 많다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 무엇보다도 그러한 견해를 따를 경우 금강 이남의 지역에서 일어난 백제부흥운동을 제대로 이해할 수 없다는 한계를 지적할 수가 있다. 그것은 금강 이북의 충청남도 지 역과 금강 이남의 전라북도 지역에서 일어난 백제부흥운동의 전개과정 을 살펴봄으로써 극복될 수가 있을 것이다. 한편 대전지역이 부흥운동의 전개과정에 커다란 영향력을 미쳤던 곳임을 파악할 수 있다. 금강 이북과 금강 이남에서 일어난 부흥운동을 연결시켜 주는 중요한 역할을 하였던 대전지역이 신라이냐, 백제이냐, 즉 누구에 의하여 장악되느냐에 의해서 부흥운동의 향방이 결정되었기 때문이다. 따라서 현재로서는 부안지역에 주류성이 있었다는 견해가 보 다 유력하다고 말할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

One of the major controversies regarding the study of Baekje history is the location of the Juryu fortress, which was the main stronghold of the Baekje Restoration Movement. Recently, the view that Juryu fortress was located in the Seocheon region has been intensively raised. Therefore, the present article investigates how persuasive those arguments are. That is, there is still much room for examination, both archaeologically and in the literature, about the view that Juryu fortress was located in Seocheon. Above all, if such a view is followed, this would limit proper understanding of the Restoration Movement that took place in the region south of the Geum river. This can be overcomed when the Baekjae Resto- ration Movement that took place both in the Chungcheongnam-do, situated north of the Geum river, and in the Jeollabuk-do, which is south of the Geum river, are considered. Meanwhile, the Daejeon region had a significant influence on the process of the Baekje Restoration Movement. This is because the direction of the Restoration Movement was determined by whether the Daejeon region, which played a key role in connecting the movements that took place in the regions south and north of the Geum river, was occupied by Silla or Baekje. Therefore, it can be said that a view that Juryu fortress was located in the Buan region seems more reasonable.
