외국인 학부생의 비판적 사고력 신장을 위한 학문적 토론 수업 사례 연구

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 대학 내 외국인 학부생들의 비판적 사고력 신장을 위한 학문적 토론 수업의 사례를 제시하였다. 비판적 사고력은 대학의 주된 교육 목표로서, 외국인 학부생이 학업을 성공적으로 수행하기 위해 반드시 필요한 능력이라고 할 수 있다. 비판적 사고력은 크게 비판적 사고 기능과 비판적 사고 성향으로 구성되는데, 본고에서는 학문적 토론 수업을 시행함으로써 토론 과정에서 비판적 사고 기능과 성향을 두루 향상시킬 수 있는 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 본고에서 실시한 학문적 토론 수업은 한국어로 유창하게 자신의 주장을 표현하는 토론 자체에 초점을 두는 방식이 아닌, 토론을 준비하고 수행하며 마무리하는 모든 단계에서 학습자들이 논제에 대해 비판적으로 접근할 수 있도록 다양한 활동을 제공하 는 방식으로 진행되었다. 한 학기 동안 여섯 개의 논제에 대한 토론 수업이 진행되었고, 수업이 종료된 후에 학습자들의 비판적 사고력에 변화가 있었는지를 확인하기 위해 ‘비판적 사고 성향’에 대한 검사를 실시하였다. 검사 결과, 이 수업을 수강하기 전 학문적 토론이나 비판적 사고에 초점을 둔 교과목에 대한 경험이 없는 학습자들이 ‘지적열정/호기심, 신중성, 자신감, 체계성, 지적공정성, 건전한 회의성, 객관성’의 7개 요소에서 모두 높은 점수를 보였다. 따라서 학문적 토론 수업이 외국인 학부생들의 비판적 사고 성향을 유도하는 데 효과가 있었다고 추론할 수 있다. 향후 더욱 다양한 토론 수업을 통해 외국인 학부생들의 비판적 사고력 신장을 도모해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study presented the case of the academic debate class for the increase of critical thinking skills of foreign undergraduates in university. As a major goal of university education, critical thinking is an essential skill for foreign undergraduates to have if they are going to successfully complete their studies. Critical thinking is largely composed of critical thinking function and critical thinking disposition. Thus, this study aims to seek out the measures that will help us improve both critical thinking function and disposition among our students through the process of debate. In this thesis, the academic debate class is conducted not by focusing on the debate itself as a means for students to improve their Korean speaking skills but by providing various activities to the learners so that they can critically approach the subject at each stage of the debate; preparing, performing, and finishing. After conducting the debate class, which included about a total of six subjects during a semester, a test on ‘critical thinking disposition’ was conducted to verify any changes in the learners’ critical thinking skills. According to the results of the test, the learners who had no previous experience in subjects focusing on academic debate or critical thinking showed high scores in all of the seven key elements in intellectual eagerness/curiosity, prudence, self-confidence, systemicity, intellectual fairness, healthy skepticism, and objectivity. Thus, the results of this study showed the effects of academic debate class on inducing the critical thinking disposition of foreign undergraduates. In light of this, it is necessary to promote the increase of critical thinking of foreign undergraduates through a wide range of debate classes in the future.
