국문 초록

16세기 프로테스탄트 종교개혁의 성격과 강조점을 정확하게 이해하기 위해서는 이를 당시 전개된 로마 가톨릭의 개선 시도와 비교해 볼 필요가 있다. 1545년부터 1564년까지 계속된 트렌트 회의는 16세기 로마 가톨릭의 자체 개선 시도를 대표하는 사건 가운데 하나이었다. 칼빈은 1547년 발표한 “트렌트공의회 교령과 해독제”를 통해 트렌트 회의의 주요 교리 결정 사항을 반박하고 종교개혁의 바른 기초와 타당한 방식을 적극적으로 설명했다. 본 논문의 목적은 트렌트 회의의 “개혁 법령”들에 대한 칼빈의 비판을 검토함으로써 프로테스탄트 종교개혁의 목적과 요점을 규명하려 하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 16세기 로마 가톨릭의 변화 시도에 대한 해석상 논란에 대해 간략히 소개한 후, 이 맥락 가운데 트렌트 회의의 배경과 진행과정, 그리고 주요 결정 사항들을 검토한다. 그리고 이어서 칼빈의 “해독제”와 “교회개혁의 필요성”에 나타난 칼빈의 비판을 구체적으로 검토함으로써 그의 비판 가운데 발견할 수 있는 종교개혁에 대한 그의 주장들을 정리한다. 칼빈을 포함한 종교개혁자들은 성경의 가르침에 충실한 합당한 예배를 회복하고 바른 공동체를 수립함으로써 교회를 세우신 그리스도의 주권을 재확립하는 신앙적 개혁을 주장했다. 그리고 트렌트 회의가 대표하는 로마 가톨릭의 개선 시도를 반박하면서 이에 맞서 성경 진리에 합치한 교리를 개혁의 기초로 확립할 것, 그리스도의 통치권 구현을 교회개혁의 유일한 목적으로 삼을 것, 오직 하나님의 영광만을 드러내기 위해 기득권과 세속적 욕망을 단호하게 포기할 것을 강조했다.

영문 초록

In order to understand the features of the sixteenth-century protestant reformation, we need to compare it with the renewal attempts of the Roman Catholic side in that period. The Council of Trent (1545-1564) was the most important official attempt of the Roman Catholic renewal. John Calvin published “Acts of the Council of Trent with the Antidote” in 1547 to refute the early decisions of this Council. This study aims to highlight the purpose and the focal points of the sixteenth-century protestant reformation by analyzing Calvin’s criticism of the Council of Trent. After briefly dealing with the controversy over the interpretation of the Roman Catholic reactions to the protestant reformation, this study investigates historical background, process, and the reformation decrees of the Council. Like other protestant reformers, Calvin maintained that the true reformation of the Church was nothing but the pious commitment for the re-establishment of Christ’s sole headship in the Church. He refuted the decisions of the Council of Trent because they intended to confirm and strengthen the papal authority and the Roman Catholic hierarchical system. Against the Roman Catholic renewal, the protestant reformation emphasized three practical points: the truth of Scripture as the only ultimate standard, realization of Christ’s headship as the sole purpose of the church reformation, and resolute commitment in abandoning all the worldly interest for the glory of God.
