국문 초록

미국의 추상표현주의의 흐름에서 파생된 새로운 도예운동은 현대도예의 개념을 굳게 확립시켰다. 이는 도예 분야가 가진 표현적 한계를 극복하고 다양한 장르와 교감할 수 있도록 허용하였다. 미국의 뉴욕주립 알프레드 요업대학교(New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University) 에서 수십 년간 학생을 지도해왔던 교육자로 널리 알려진 작가 웨인 힉비(Wayne Higby)는 도예문화의 흐름이 급진적인 형태로 변모하던 1960년대 말부터 활동하기 시작했다. 웨인 힉비는 도자 용기의 형상 그 근본적인 조형성에 주목하며,‘기(器)’를 단순히 물리적 기능으로서 바라본 것이 아니라 예술가로서의 표현 주체로서 활용하였다. 이와 같은 시도는 현재의 도예영역이 다양한 방식으로 확장, 표현되는데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 웨인 힉비가 1970년대부터 시작한 풍경이 담긴 용기 작업은 그가 태어나고 유년기를 보낸 콜로라도주, 볼더(Boulder, Colorado)의 풍경과 이미지를 담고 있다. 오래전부터 많은 화가들이 화폭에 담아왔던 로키산맥의 이미지는 그에게는 눈을 뜨면 펼쳐진 일상적 풍경이었으며, 그 아름다움은 직관적으로 그에게 채득되었을 것임을 짐작할 수 있다. 그는 용기의 형태로부터 도출한 내부와 외부공간을 회화적 표현의 캔버스로서 이용해왔다. 라쿠번조기법으로 표현된 그의 작품은 보는 이로 하여금 방향성에 따라 다른 장면으로 이어지는 풍경의 파노라마가 펼쳐지는 느낌을 자아낸다. 1991년 처음 중국을 방문하면서 시작된 교류활동에서 그의 풍경에 대한 관심은 동양문화 및 철학과 만나게 된다. 이때의 경험은 백자라는 소지를 활용한 고화도 백자작업의 은유적 표현으로 연결되었으며, 중국의 산업도자공장과 협업을 통해 대형작품까지 확장되었다. 작가는 40여 년 동안 도예의 근원인 ‘기’의 형태부터 합, 조형, 그리고 건축도자에 이르기까지 현대도예에서 다뤄지고 있는 많은 영역을 탐구하였다. 교육자로서의 웨인 힉비보다 비중 있게 다뤄지지 않았던 도예작가 웨인 힉비의 작품을 살펴봄으로서, 그의 활동이 다음세대의 도예가들에게 미친 영향과 21세기 도자예술이 지향해야할 미래에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

The ceramics movement in the flow of American abstract expressionism gave birth to the concept of contemporary ceramics, which allowed the field of ceramics to overcome its expressive limitations and interact with a variety of genres. Wayne Higby, who is widely known as an educator that has taught students at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University for decades, started his creative works in the late 1960s when the flow of the ceramic culture made a rapid turn. Focusing on the fundamental formativeness of ceramic vessel forms, he used vessels as the subject of expression as an artist instead of their simple physical functions. His attempt played an important role in the expansion and expression of today s ceramics field in various manners. The vessel works containing landscapes, which Higby started in the 1970s, reflect the landscapes and images of Boulder, Colorado, where he was born and spent his childhood. The images of the marvelous canyons, rugged mountains, and lakes along the Rocky Mountains, which have been captured by many artists for many years, were everyday landscapes that he would encounter every morning. It seems that he learned their beauty intuitively. Higby uses the internal and external space of a vessel as a canvas for his pictorial expressions. His works in the Raku Firing Technique make viewers feel like a panorama of scenery is spreading to following scenes according to various directors. His interest in landscapes met with the Orient culture and philosophy he came across via diverse exchange activities that began in 1991 when he made his first visit to China. These experiences led to the metaphorical expression of high fired porcelain based on clay called white porcelain and expanded to his large-scale ceramic relief work completed in his collaboration with an industrial ceramics plant in China. In his creative journey over almost 40 years, Higby has made an attempt at almost every area of modern ceramics from the forms of vessels, which are the origin of ceramics, and their combinations to formative ceramics and architectural ceramics. By examining the creative theory of Higby as a ceramic artist, which aspect has not been addressed more actively than his aspect as an educator, this study set out to figure out the influences of his activities on the next generation ceramists and investigate the future that ceramists should pursue in the 21st century.
