국문 초록

경제성장은 소득을 늘려 에너지 소비를 증가시키기도 하지만, 노동과 자본처럼 하나의 투입요소로 에너지 소비는 경제성장에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 에너지 소비와 경제성장의 상호의 존성을 규명하기 위해 그랜저 인과성, 예측오차 분산분해, 충격반응함수 분석이 활용되었다. 생산함수를 기반으로 국내총생산, 노동, 자본, 에너지 소비의 1981년부터 2020년의 연간자료가 이용되었다. 분석 결과 구조적 변화를 고려하면 에너지 소비와 국내총생산 간 장기적 균형 관계가 존재하지 않는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 에너지 소비변동과 경제성장 사이에 양방향의 그랜저 인과관계가 성립하는 것으로 나타났다. 경제성장이 에너지 소비변동에 미치는 영향력이 에너지 소비변동이 경제성장에 미치는 영향력보다 상대적으로 큰 것으로 나타났다. 에너지 소비변동은 경제성장에 부담으로 작용할 수 있지만, 경제성장은 에너지 소비변동을 증가시켰다. 에너지 소비변동과 경제성장은 상호 예측에 도움이 되지만, 충격에 대한 반응은 차이가 날 수 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Energy consumption plays an important role in economic growth as a factor of production such as labor and capital, but as the economy grows, income increases, which can contribute to increasing energy consumption. In order to analyze the interdependence between economic growth and energy consumption, a production function model including four variables of gross domestic product, labor, capital, and energy consumption was used through annual data from 1981 to 2020. Granger causality, variance decomposition of prediction error, and impulse response function analysis were used. As a result, it was found that there is no long-run stable relationship between energy consumption and gross domestic product when structural changes are taken into account. There was a bidirectional short-term causal relationship between energy consumption fluctuations and economic growth. The forecasting error variance decomposition and the impulse response function analysis were consistent with the results of the Granger causal analysis. It was found that the effect of economic growth on energy consumption fluctuations is relatively larger than the influence of energy consumption fluctuations on economic growth. Energy consumption fluctuations can act as a burden on economic growth, but economic growth has increased energy consumption fluctuations. It can be concluded that changes in energy consumption and economic growth are helpful for mutual prediction.
