금하광덕의 도심포교와 보현행원

금하광덕(1927-1999)은 현대 한국불교의 도심포교를 대표하는 인물임에도 ‘전법사’라는 호칭이 아니라 ‘선사’로서 평가한다. 금하광덕을 ‘선사’이면서 ‘전법사’로 이해하는 시선은 진실과 방편의 틀로 설명할 수 있다. 금하광덕의 ‘선사’의 측면은 한국불교의 전통에 부합하는 금하광덕의 진실에 해당하고, ‘전법사’의 측면은 시대 상황에 맞는 면모를 발휘한 금하광덕의 방편에 해당한다고 보는 것이다. 그리고 방편이 바로 진실상이라는 시각을 얹으면 금하광덕의 전법사의 면모가 바로 선사의 면모인 셈이 된다. 이 글은 이런 시각에서 금하광덕을 대표하는 도심포교의 면모를 설명하였다. 금하광덕의 도심포교의 이념과 실천원리를 설명하면서 반야바라밀과 보현행원을 양날개처럼 이야기하지만 사실 금하광덕은 항상 보현행을 거론하였음을 확인하였다. 그리고 전법사의 면모가 바로 선사의 면모가 될 수 있게 하는 매개가 금하광덕의 보현행원에 있음을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

Ven. Geumha Gwangdeok (1927-1999) is a representative master of urban propagation in modern Korean Buddhism. However, he is evaluated as a Seon master rather than a buddhist propagator. The understanding Geumha Gwangdeok as the Seon master and the buddhist propagator can be explained by the framework of the truth and skillful means. His aspect of the Seon master corresponds to the truth of him, which is consistent with the tradition of Korean Buddhism, and his aspect of the buddhist propagator does to the skiilful means of him, which showed its aspect according to the times. And if you put the view that the skillful means is the truth, his aspect of the buddhist propagator is the aspect of the Seon master. This paper explains the characteristics of his urban propagation from this perspective. In general, his ideology and practice of urban propagation are explained like the two wings of Prajña Pāramitā and the Samantabhadra’s Vows of Practice, but in fact, it was confirmed that he always mentioned the Samantabhadra’s Vows of Practice. In addition, it was suggested that there is a medium in the Samantabhadra’s Vows of Practice that allows his aspect of the buddhist propagator become that of the Seon master.
