국문 초록

이 글의 주제는 18~19세기 독일인의 미국 이주이다. 2장에서는 이주의 시작과 진행 과정, 이주의 규모 등을 살펴보았으며, 3장에서는 독일인이 고향과 조국을 떠나도록 한 여러 원인을 찾아보았다. 마지막으로 4장에서는 독일 이주민이 새로운 정착지에서 어떠한 삶을 살았는지, 미국 이주가 독일에서의 삶보다 더 나은 것이었는지, 미국 사회에서 문화적 통합 과정은 순조로웠는지를 들여다보았다. 18~19세기 미국 이주는 독일만이 아닌 유럽 전역에서 일어난 현상이었다. 유럽 출신 이주민 중 독일인이 가장 많은 수를 차지했다. 20세기 초 독일 이주민과 그들의 후손은 미국 인구의 10%를 차지했다. 독일인을 포함한 유럽인에게 미국이 이주지로 주목받은 이유는 단기간에 획득한 방대한 영토에 시급히 식민을 해야 하는 미국의 사정 때문이었다. 땅이 필요한 유럽인과 땅을 경작할 사람이 필요한 미국은 이상적인 거래 파트너였다. 게다가 19세기 후반 본격화된 미국의 산업화 역시 이주를 촉진한 주요 원인 중 하나였다. 18세기에는 종교적인 이유에서 신대륙을 선택한 이주민이 적지 않았다. 미국은 독일의 종교적 소수자에게 구원의 땅이었다. 정치적인 이유에서 미국으로 건너간 이들은 수적으로 미미했지만, 미국 사회에서 활발하게 활동했다. 당시로서는 진보적이었던 미국 공화정은 왕정에 불만을 품은 독일 지식인의 시선을 끌 만했다. 독일 이주민은 대부분 수공업과 농업에 종사하며 경제적으로는 별다른 문제 없이 미국 사회에 통합되었다. 그들은 이미 이주 전에 독일에서 전문성을 갖춘 질 좋은 노동력이었으며, 그들이 생산한 제품과 농산물은 호평받았다. 문화적으로는 특히 폐쇄적인 종교 공동체를 중심으로 언어와 풍습을 유지하려는 경향이 존재했다. 독일어 신문이 발행되었고, 자녀를 영어권 학교에 보내기를 꺼리는 부모들이 적지 않았다. 그러나 이주민의 세대가 거듭될수록 고유의 독일적 정체성이 점차 소멸하였다.

영문 초록

The subject of this article is the immigration of Germans to the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Chapter 2 it examines the beginning and progress of migration, the scale of migration, etc. In Chapter 3, we look into the various causes that drove Germans to leave their homeland. Finally, in Chapter 4 it looks into how German immigrants lived in their new settlements, whether American immigration was better than life in Germany, and whether the process of cultural integration in American society was smooth. In the 18th and 19th centuries, immigration to the United States was a phenomenon that occurred not only in Germany, but throughout Europe. Germans made up the largest number of immigrants from Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, German immigrants and their descendants made up 10% of the US population. The reason the United States was attracting attention from Europeans, including Germans, as a place of immigration was because of the urgent need to colonize the vast territories acquired in a short period of time. Europeans who needed land and America, who needed people to cultivate the land, were ideal trading partners. In addition, industrialization in the United States, which began in earnest in the late 19th century, was also one of the main factors that promoted immigration. In the 18th century, there were also many immigrants who chose the new continent for religious reasons. America was the land of salvation for the religious minority in Germany. Those who emigrated to the United States for political reasons were few in number, but were active in American society. The progressive American republic at the time deserved the attention of German intellectuals who were dissatisfied with the monarchy. German immigrants mostly engaged in handicrafts and agriculture, and were integrated into American society without any economic problems. They already had a high-quality, specialized workforce in Germany before the emigration, and the products and agricultural products they produced were well-received. Culturally, there was a tendency to maintain language and customs, especially in closed religious communities. German newspapers were published, and many parents were reluctant to send their children to English-speaking schools. However, as the generations of immigrants passed, the unique German identity gradually disappeared.
