미국과 한국 대학의 전공 자유선택 제도 비교 분석

국문 초록

[연구목적] 본 연구는 한국 대학에서 도입하고 있는 전공 자유선택 제도의 특징을 미국의 리버럴 아츠 칼리지와 비교 분석하고자 한다. [연구방법] 이를 위해 사례연구의 방법을 택했으며, 각국의 대표적인 사례로서 미국의 Amherst college와 한국의 서울대 자유전공학부를 선정하였다. 연구를 위한 분석틀로는 Immegart & Prilecki(1973)의 제도 분석틀을 활용하여 각 사례의 투입, 과정, 산출, 피드백, 환경 등을 분석하였다. [연구결과] 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 투입의 측면에서 Amherst college는 입학생의 인종적 다양성을 중시하고, 중도 탈락율이 비교적 낮으며, 교수 1인당 학생수는 매우 적다. 이에 비해, 서울대 자유전공학부는 교수 1인당 학생수가 매우 많다. 둘째, 과정의 측면에서 Amherst college와 서울대 자유전공학부는 학부 교육의 목표와 이를 위한 교육 방식이 매우 유사한 것이 확인되었으나, 서울대 자유전공학부는 자유교양교육에 더하여 실천적 인재 양성이라는 목표를 추구하는 것이 확인되었다. 셋째, 산출의 측면에서, Amherst college에서 학생들이 가장 많이 선택하는 전공은 사회과학, 바이오/생명과학, 수학과 통계학인 반면, 서울대 자유전공학부 학생들은 경제학, 경영학, 컴퓨터 공학 순으로 실용적인 학문을 많이 택하는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 피드백의 측면에서 입학 추이를 보았을 때 이러한 전공 자유선택 제도는 학생들에게 긍정적으로 인식되는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 마지막으로 환경의 측면에서 대학 간 기능과 역할 구분이 분명한 미국에서 Amherst college는 학사 대학으로서 자유 교양교육이라는 목표에 충실한 학부 교육을 실시하고 있는 반면, 미국과 달리 대학 간 기능과 역할 구분이 분명하지 않은 한국 대학에서 ‘대학 내 대학’으로서 독특하게 존재하는 자유전공학부는 형식적으로는 미국의 자유교양교육을 추구하는 것 같지만 결과적으로는 자유교양교육과 실용적 지식 획득이라는 이중적인 목표를 모두 달성하기 위해 노력하고 있다. [결론] 한국형 전공 자유선택 제도가 제대로 이루어지기 위해서는 교수 1인당 학생 비율을 낮추고, 자유교양교육이 제대로 실행될 수 있는 체계적 교육과정을 마련해야 한다.

영문 초록

[Purpose] This study is to compare and analyze the characteristics of the free choice of major system introduced by Korean universities with those of liberal arts colleges in the United States. [Methods] For this purpose, the method of case study was chosen, and as representative examples of each country, Amherst College in the United States and Seoul National University’s College of Liberal Studies in Korea were selected. As an analysis framework for the study, the input, process, output, feedback, environment, etc. of each case were analyzed using the institutional analysis framework of Immegart & Prilecki(1973). [Results] The analysis results are as follows. First, in terms of input, Amherst college values racial diversity of incoming students, and the dropout rate is relatively low. The number of students per professor was very small. In contrast, College of Liberal Studies of Seoul National University has a very large number of students per professor. Second, in terms of process, it was confirmed that the goals of undergraduate education and the educational method for this were very similar to Amherst college and Seoul National University s College of Liberal Studies. Third, in terms of output, the majors most frequently selected by students at Amherst college are social sciences, bio/life sciences, mathematics and statistics, whereas students of College of Liberal Studies of Seoul National University choose economics, business administration, and computer science. Fourth, when looking at the admissions trend in terms of feedback, this major free choice system can be seen as positively perceived by students. Lastly, in the United States, where there is a clear division of functions and roles between universities in terms of environment, Amherst college is a bachelor s college that provides undergraduate education faithful to the undergraduate goal of liberal arts education. The College of Liberal Studies, which exists uniquely as a university within a university in a Korean university that has not yet achieved this goal of being a fully liberal arts institution. [Conclusion] In order for the Korean-style free major selection system to be implemented properly, it is necessary to lower the ratio of students per professor and prepare a systematic curriculum to properly implement liberal arts education.
