아브라함 카이퍼의 ‘영역주권’ 사상의 현대적 의의

국문 초록

이 논문은 코로나 19로 인한 한국사회에서의 교회와 국가 사이의 갈등을 아브라함 카이퍼의 ‘영역주권’ 사상을 통해 해결책을 제시하는데 있다. 카이퍼는 암스테르담 자유대학교 개교 연설에서 영역주권을 선언하였는데, 이 사상은 그리스도께서 인간 삶과 사상의 모든 영역에서 절대 주권을 가지시고 통치하신다는 성경적 가르침이다. 교회와 국가는 그 존재가 하나님께로부터 비롯되었음을 기억하고, 각기 서로의 권위를 존중하며, 하나님의 부르심을 따라 맡은 바 사명을 따라 하나님의 주권과 영광을 드러내야 한다. 한편으로 국가와 정부는 인간의 죄 때문에 하나님께서 제정하신 기관임을 기억하고, 하나님께로부터 받은 자신의 영역주권으로 법률에 기초하여 사회적 영역들의 상호 경계를 조정함으로써, 영역 내에서의 약자를 보호하고 하나님의 공의를 유지함으로써 인간 삶의 풍성한 발전을 도모해야 한다. 특히 교회를 하나님의 영광을 위한 대화 상대자로 알고 그의 목소리에 귀를 기울이며 교회의 복지를 위해 노력해야 한다. 다른 한편, 교회는 국가의 존재 이유를 바르게 이해하고 법률에 따른 국가 주권의 행사를 존중해야 한다. 하지만 만일 국가가 불법적으로 교회와 신앙의 영역을 침범할 때는 교회는 자유를 위한 투쟁을 서슴지 말아야 한다. 이 투쟁의 방식은 반드시 섬김과 자기희생을 담보로 하는 십자가의 길이어야 한다. 게다가 교회는 자신의 영역주권이 침해받지 않도록 그리고 또한 국가의 하수인이 되지 않도록 스스로 하나님의 말씀 안에서 신앙과 도덕의 장력을 든든하게 길러야 한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to present a solution to the conflict between the church and the state in Korean society caused by Covid 19 through Abraham Kuyper’s concept of ‘​sphere sovereignty’. Kuyper declared sphere sovereignty in his speech at the opening of the Free University of Amsterdam, which is a biblical teaching that Christ has absolute sovereignty in all areas of human life and thinking. Remembering that their existence originated from God, the church and the state must respect each other’s sovereignty, and demonstrate God’s sovereignty and glory according to the mission they are assigned to under God’s call. On the one hand, remembering that the state is an institution established by God because of human sin, and with its sphere sovereignty received from God, by controling the boundaries of the social areas based on the law, and by protecting the weak from the stronger within the area, and by maintaining justice the state must promote human life to flourish. In particular, recognizing the church as a dialogue partner for the glory of God, the government needs to listen to her voice, and strive for the welfare of the church. On the other hand, with proper understanding the reasons for the existence of the state the church must respect the exercise of state sovereignty under the law. If the state, however, illegally invades the church and the realm of faith, the church should not hesitate to struggle for freedom. The manner of this struggle must be the way of the cross based on service and self-sacrifice. In addition, the church herself must cultivate the tensility of faith and morality in the Word of God so that her sovereignty is not violated and she also does not become a slave of the state.
