국문 초록

북한미술에서 빈번하게 등장하는 형상은 바로 ‘항미원조’이다. 1950년 10월 19일 한국 전쟁의 참여를 계기로 중국은 ‘미국에 대항하고, 조선을 도와준다’라는 의미의 ‘항미원조’를 기치로 내세웠다. 사회주의 형제국이자 전쟁을 원조해주었던 중국에 대한 북한의 입장은 전쟁 중 중국인민지원군의 희생과 국제주의 정신을 표방하고자 했다. 따라서 항미원조 형상에서 빈번하게 등장하는 주제는 세 가지다. 첫 번째는 전쟁의 형상화, 두 번째는 영웅의 형상화, 세 번째는 전후복구건설을 돕는 중국인민지원군의 형상이다. 항미원조 형상은 한국전쟁 중 열린 《조국해방전쟁 미술 전람회》에서부터 주로 등장하기 시작하여 전후복구건설 시기에서 점차 빈번히 등장했다. 이후 중국인민지원군이 한반도에서 철수할 것을 결정하자, 북한의 미술가들은 《환송 가두 전람회》나 양국의 친선을 상징하고 중국인민지원군의 행보를 찬양하는 우의탑 제작 과정에 착수하기도 했다. 1958년 중국인민지원군의 업적을 기리고자 출판되었던 『의로운 벗 두터운 사랑』은 1950년부터 1958년간 중국인민지원군의 행보를 추적하고, 휴전 이후에도 그들의 한반도 주둔에 대한 이유를 정당화하기 위해 제작된 소형 만화책(연속화)이었다. 이를 만화책으로 제작한 이유는 바로 가장 대중적이고 쉽게 다가갈 시각매체의 필요성에 의한 것이었다. 이 책에는 중국인민지원군의 용맹함, 형제국 북한을 위해 명예롭게 희생된 그들의 모습이 영웅적으로 그려져 있다. 이 책에 등장하는 인물들은 북한미술가들에 의해 프롤레타리아 국제주의 정신과 애국주의, 민족주의 정신을 보여주는 영웅으로 그려졌다. 한국전쟁이 국제적인 성격의 전쟁이었던 만큼 ‘항미원조전쟁’에 대한 객관적인 시각이 필요하다. 따라서 이 『의로운 벗 두터운 사랑』은 북한에서 만들어졌음에도 불구하고 중국의 입장인 ‘항미원조’의 시각에서 그렸다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다.

영문 초록

One of the most frequently appearing art styles in North Korea was ‘Anti-America Pro- Joseon’. In light of its participation in the Korean War on Oct. 19, 1950, China adopted ‘Anti-America Pro-Joseon’ literally meaning ‘resisting the U.S. and helping Joseon’ as its national banner. North Korea took the stance of appraising China as a socialist brother at war and sought to advocate the sacrifi ce and internationalism spirit of the Chinese People’s Assistance Force during the war. In this vein, the three topics that frequently appear in ‘Anti-America Pro-Joseon’ initiative are as follows : fi guration of war, fi guration of heroes, and the fi guration of the Chinese People’s Assistance Force that help with the postwar restoration. The illustration of Anti-America Pro-Joseon started to be made public mainly in the ‘National Liberation War Art Exhibition’ held during the Korean War and was more frequently introduced during the postwar reconstruction period. Upon fi nalizing the decision to withdraw the Chinese People’s Assistance Force from the Korean Peninsula, North Korean artists even commenced the project of showcasing their mutual friendship and comradeship between the two nations and of commending the supportive move of the Chinese People’s Assistance Force through such events as ‘Farewell Street Exhibition’ and building a Friendship Tower. ‘Loyalty and Love’ published in 1958 to honor the achievements of the Chinese People’s Assistance Force is a small comic book designed to track and trace the acts of the Chinese People’s Assistance Force for eight years from 1950 to a1958 and to justify their presence on the Korean Peninsula even after the armistice. Th e reason why it is produced in a comic book form is because of their need for the visual media characterized by easy accessibility and popularity among ordinary people. This comic book depicts the heroic and brave acts of the Chinese People’s Assistance Force and their honorable sacrifi ce for North Korea, the brother country. Th e North Korean artists portray the characters in the book as heroes showcasing the spirit of proletarian internationalism, patriotism, and nationalism. Since the Korean War has international implications, there is a need for an objective view of the ‘Anti-America Pro-Joseon’ war. In this respect, the ‘Loyalty and Love’ carries signifi cant implications in that it is produced from the Chinese perspective of ‘Anti-America Pro-Joseon’ although it was produced in North Korea.
