수사학은 덕성의 형성에 관계하는가?

국문 초록

이 글은 수사학이 덕 있는 성격의 형성에 이바지하는가의 물음을 다룬다. 논자들 가운데 일부는 아리스토텔레스의 수사학에 도덕적 개념들이 등장한다는 점을 들어 그가 구상하는 수사학이 사람을 덕 있게 하는 데에 관여한다는 입장을 취한다. 아닌 게 아니라 아리스토텔레스는 자신의 수사학을 ‘윤리‧정치적 연구’의 접가지라고 규정할 뿐만 아니라 수사학의 여러 곳에서 도덕철학의 물음을 논한다. 그러나 그런 물음이 다뤄진다는 사실만으로 수사학의 도덕철학적 개입을 주장할 수 있는지는 의문이다. 이에 이 글은 아리스토텔레스가 행복, 덕, 정의, 고상함 등 도덕철학적 개념들을 자주 구사하는 이유는 무엇인지, 그가 말하는 수사학은 ‘윤리‧정치적 연구’와 어떤 관계에 있는지 등의 물음을 논함으로써 수사학이 덕성의 형성에 (어떻게) 관계하는지의 물음에 답한다.

영문 초록

It is the task of this article is to deal with the question whether Aristotle’s art of rhetoric is to be concerned with the formation of good and virtuous characters. Since in Aristotle’s Rhetoric emotions and character play a crucial role, many authors jumped to the conclusion that an Aristotelian rhetorician must be concerned with the formation of good and virtuous characters. Indeed rhetoric is for Aristotle a certain kind or offshoot of dialectic and the study of character. And major parts of the Rhetoric are dedicated to the definition of such concepts as just, good, noble, etc. and to listing those things that are said to be just, good, noble, etc. However the presence of accepted opinions (endoxa) of what is good, just, pleasant, etc. in the Rhetoric does not prove any ethical commitment. It is examined here why Aristotle employs so often such concepts as happiness, virtue, justice, nobleness etc. And it must be clarified how Aristotle’s rhetoric project relates to the study of character. At the end we understand whether Aristotle’s art of rhetoric is to be concerned with the formation of good and virtuous characters.
