국문 초록

영연방 점령군의 보고서 ｢에히메현으로의 불법 입국 관리｣는 1948년 10월 일본 에히메현 가와노이시 인근에서 나포된 6척의 선박과 거기에 타고 있던 285명의 제주 사람들에 대해 기록하고 있다. 기존 연구는 명부에 기록된 체포자들의 통계 분석에 그쳤을 뿐, ‘불법입국자’로 명명된 제주 사람들의 신원을 파악하고 행방을 좇는 실증적 검증에는 이르지 못했다. 이에 본고에서는 일제강점기 강제동원자 명부, 4·3 ‘희생자’ 명부와의 교차비교를 통해 현 단계에서 추정 가능한 3명의 신원을 추적했다. 영연방 점령군은 ‘불법입국자’를 한국으로 추방했지만 그들의 행방은 오늘날까지 묘연한 상태다. 이러한 상황을 타개하기 위해서는 실종된 사람들을 섣불리 죽은 존재로 예단한 나머지 검토를 소홀히 했던 관련 자료의 발굴과 교차 분석이 필수적이다. 한국정부가 주도하는 4·3 문제 해결의 방향성 역시 그 시기에 자취를 감춘 사람들을 단순히 ‘행방불명자’ 로 승인하고 각명하는데 그칠 것이 아니라 그들의 행방불명 이후의 행방을 추적하는 개별적이고 구체적인 접근 방식으로 전환될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The British Commonwealth Occupation Force(BCOF) Report, “Certified Official Translation: Control of Illegal Entry into Ehime Prefecture”, contains records of the 6 ships and 285 people from Jeju who were captured in October 1948 in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. In the previous study, only the statistical analysis of the named ‘illegal entrants’, was performed, but no empirical analysis was conducted on the identity of Jeju people listed in the list. This study traces the identity of three people who can be presumed at this stage through cross-comparison with the forced mobilization list in Japanese occupation period and the list of the 4.3 victim. The BCOF expelled illegal entrants to South Korea, but their whereabouts are still unknown up to this day. In order to solve this problem, it is essential to compare the missing people prejudged as being dead in a hurry with other data that neglected the review. The direction of the past liquidation led by the Korean government also needs to be changed to an individual and specific approach to track their whereabouts, not just to approve and name people who have disappeared in the period of 4.3 as ‘the missing people’.
