국문 초록

즉지헌 유언호는 정조의 묘정에 배향될 정도로 정조의 핵심 신료였다. 과거에 급제한 그는 영조의 탕평이 戚臣 위주로 운영되는 상황에 반감을 표출하였다. 이에 정계 입문에 난항을 예고했지만, 얼마 지나지 않아 왕세손 정조의 스승으로 발탁되거나 관료학자로 자주 임용되는 저력을 보여주었다. 이는 출사 이전에 지역의 문인들과 道統을 강론하고 修己를 권면 실천해나간 과정에서 형성된 학자의 면모와 학문의 수준에서 기인한 것이었다. 학문 능력에 대한 명성이 정치적 난관을 이긴 인물이라 할 수 있다. 유언호는 도암 이재와 유언집의 학문을 통해 주자학을 궁구하였고, 18세기 중반 격변하는 시대 흐름에 따라 약화되는 성리학의 道統을 바로잡으려 노력하였다. 이에 道에 따라 修己하고, 義理에 따라 처세하는 등의 世敎 의론을 記文에 녹여 기록하였다. 출사 이전의 記文에서는 道統의 이해와 탐구를 위하여 주희, 길재, 이재등의 사상을 엿보았고, 君子가 사물을 인식하고 세상에 대처했던 방법을 설명하면서 삶에 실천할 것을 적극 주장하는 내용이 기록되어 있다. 출사 이후의 記文에서는 왕세손 정조의 스승 역할에 충실한 유언호가 경전, 역사서, 주자의 공부법 등의 강의를 통해 有用之學과 心學工夫 등을 강조한 이력들과 관련된 내용이 서술되어 있다. 또한, 그는 義理論을 철저히 실천하다 영조의 정계에서 두 차례의 유배를 다녀오게 되는데, 유배지에서의 고통을 이겨내는 ‘能安’과 사대부로서의 ‘恭’ 의론을 펼쳐내며 不變의 義理를 표출하였다. 정조 즉위 이전의 유언호의 행력은 정조의 즉위와 동시에 得意를 안겨주었다. 記文에 나타난 道統 계승은 유교의 재정립을 통해 조선 후기의 약화된 왕권을 강화시키는 방면으로 작용하였고, 義理에 대한 삶의 실천 양상은 정조와의 평생 인연이 되는 계기가 되었다. 유언호의 정통주자학과 경전 등 기본학문에 대한 충실한 탐독과 정조와의 강의는 고문의 순정화 정책에 연결되었고, 義理에 대한 중시와 실천은 능력 위주의 인재 선발이라는 의리탕평 정책에 타당성을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

Jeuk Ji-heon Eu Eon-ho served as one of the key subjects of King Jeongjo for the rest of his life, so much so that he was enshrined in the Jeongjo s Myojeong. Following his successful passing of the state examination, he expressed his antipathy to the circumstance where King Yeoungjo’s recruitment of officials was unfairly skewed toward hiring more king s relatives and concurrently subjects and suffered from a lot of complications while trying to adhere to the justice and loyalty. However, his personal experiences of interacting with local literary men, expounding the Confucian Orthodoxy, and promising and practicing self-cultivation solidified his image as an academic scholar and enhanced his academic capacity, and the fact that he was appointed selected as a teacher of King Jeongjo and frequently as a scholar-bureaucrat indicates that his academic capacity surpassed his political orientation. Eu Eon-ho made efforts to inherit the orthodox of Zhu Xi that passed from Uam Song Si-yeol and Doam Yi-jae and recorded his opinions about the knowledge of the world in his writings in an attempt to correct the weakening Confucian Orthodoxy of Neo-Confucianism witnessed in the mid-18th century characterized by rapid changes. Prior to taking up a public office, he looked into the ideas of Ju Hee, Gil Jae, and Lee Jae to explore and understand the Confucian Orthodoxy and left his written preach of practicing what noble men are supposed to do in terms of recognizing things and dealing with the world. The records following his taking of oath in office say that he stayed faithful in carrying out his duty as a teacher of King Jeongjo, the eldest grandson of the King, leaving the records of placing emphasis on the practical study (有用之學) and the practical ethics and awakening of good nature (心學工夫) through lectures on scriptures, history books, and the method of study by Zhu Xi. Eu Eon-ho was also exiled twice during the King Yeongjo’s reign on a charge of thoroughly practicing the theory of loyalty and implied a sense of unswerving loyalty while manifesting 能安 to overcome the pain in exile and the theory of ‘恭’ as a nobleman. The careers and activities of Eu Eon-ho prior to King Jeongjo s enthronement gave him prosperity immediately upon Jeongjo s accession to the throne. The practice pattens on the Confucian Orthodoxy and loyalty written in the records served as an opportunity for him to build a lifelong relationship with King Jeongjo. Eu Eon-ho’s adherence to the Confucian basics such as the orthodox of Zhu Xi and scriptures influenced King Jeongjo s Sunjeonggomun policy and his practice of loyalty presented the basis for the policy of recruiting talents according to their ability.
