禹周榮의 생애와 『梧南稿』에 투영된 삶의 지향

국문 초록

禹周榮(1822~1890)은 구한말 在地士族의 한사람으로 본고는 그의 立志傳的인 삶과 그가 남긴 시집 『梧南稿』에 관하여 고찰한 것이다. 우주영은 그동안 학계에 알려진 바는 소략하나 남아 있는 기록들로 볼 때 그의 가계와 생애는 매우 독특하다. 우주영의 선친 禹思元(1779~1857)은 致富에 힘쓴 지 30여 년 만에 千石을 거두는 부자가 되고, 그는 죽기 2년 전인 76세에 진사시에 入格하는 놀라운 능력을 보였다. 그러나 아들 우주영 代에 재산 대부분이 慈善으로 인하여 소진되고 가계가 몰락하는 흥망의 과정을 겪었다. 굴곡이 극명했던 우주영의 삶에 대한 주변의 평가로는 ‘선행의 표상’이라고 일컬어졌으나 가문의 몰락과 함께 사후 그의 삶은 알려지지 못했다. 표면적으로는 비록 지방에 閑居해 온 사대부의 한사람에 불과하지만, 그는 난세를 살아가면서 가난한 자들을 구휼하는 삶으로 일관하였다. 평생 독서와 학업을 게을리하지 않았으나 출사하지 않고 자연에 묻혀 淸貧樂道한 삶을 살았다. 그러한 그의 삶은 陶淵明, 林逋 등을 추종하였으며 그가 남긴 『오남고』의 작품에 투영되었다. 본고는 우주영이 쓴 詩 가운데 현재 유일하게 남아 있는 것으로 추정되는 『오남고』를 통하여 그의 삶의 지향성을 고찰하였다. 전반적인 그의 시 성향은 守拙하고 과장되지 않은 자연적인 특징을 지닌다. 많은 작품에서 隱者的 삶을 통하여 내면의 아픔을 극복하려는 의지가 보이며 道家思想이나 禪思想의 여운이 감지된다. 비록 이 시들은 문학사적으로 드러날 만큼 조명받을 작품은 아닐지라도 한 在地士族의 偉人的인 삶 이면에 그가 지향했던 내면세계를 유추해 볼 수 있는 자료다. 지금까지 지역의 범주에서 살다간 문인과 작품들이 학계 관심에서 비교적 소외되어왔기 때문에 이에 관한 선행연구의 성과 또한 저조한 상태다. 그러한 관점에서 우주영과 『오남고』의 연구는 19세기의 사회상과 당시 지방 詩壇의 경향을 살펴보는 데에 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

WooJuyong (1822~1890) was a man from the Late Chosun Dynasty, and this paper is about his philanthropist s life and the collection of poems he left behind, 『Onamgo(梧南稿)』. WooJuyong s family history and life are very unique in view of the surviving records, although little is known in the academic world. WooJuyong s father, WooSawon (1779~1857), became a wealthy man collecting a Thousand Suk(千石) after 30 years of working hard to accumulate wealth. However, his son WooJuyong went through a cycle of ups and downs, destroying most of his fortune as a philanthropy and the downfall of his family. In the evaluation of WooJuyong s life, where the ups and downs were clear, he was called a symbol of good deeds , but after his death with the downfall of his family, his life was not known. Although seemingly one of the high-ranking fathers who lived in the countryside, he lived a life of saving the poor while living in a chaotic world. Although he was diligent in reading and studying all his life, he did not go to a a government post and lived a poor life buried in nature. His life followed TaoYenming and LinBu, and was reflected in the works of 『Onamgo(梧南稿)』 he left behind. This paper studies the life that WooJuyong wants to follow through 『Onamgo(梧南稿)』, which is supposed to be one of the poems written by WooJuyong. Overall, his poetry has a natural character that is modest and not exaggerated. Through an anchoritic life, the will to overcome inner pain is shown, and the afterglow of DaoJia thought or Zen thought is felt. Although these poems are not works that will receive enough light to be revealed in literary history, they are materials that can infer the inner world that he pursued behind the great life of a single ethnic group. The achievements of previous studies on this are also poor because the writers and works who have lived in the local category so far have been relatively marginalized from the interest of academia. From that point of view, the study of WooJuyong and 『Onamgo(梧南稿)』 is meaningful in examining the social conditions of the 19th century and the trends of local poetry at that time.
