『燕石』 소재 序跋類 散文을 통해 본 俞彦鎬의 출처관과 문장론

국문 초록

則止軒 俞彦鎬는 영․정조의 정계에서 활발한 행력을 남긴 이유로 정치가로서의 연구 접근이 많았다. 하지만, 그의 문집 『연석』을 살펴보면 문학가로서의 행력을 분명하게 드러내고 있어 문인으로서의 연구 접근에 당위성을 부여하고 있다. 그 중 序跋類 散文은 집필 대상의 내용과 성격에 따라 인물에 대한 평가 및 자신의 견해를 잘 담아내고 있는데, 함축성을 지닌 글 속에서 유언호의 정치관․출처관․문학관․문장론 등을 여실히 살필 수 있어 정치가와 문인의 면모를 확인할 수 있다. 유언호는 영조와 정조를 보필했다. 하지만, 정계에서 처세하는 모습에는 차이를 보였다. 유언호는 義理를 강조하며 일생을 살아갔다. 영조의 탕평은 측근 중심의 탕평이라고 반대 의사를 표출하며 자주 사직을 요청했고, 이에 따라 두 차례의 유배를 다녀왔다. 정조는 세자 시절부터 사제지간을 맺고 있었으며, 의리탕평 운영을 찬성하며 적극적으로 출사하여 능력을 발휘하였다. 그러나 좌의정이라는 높은 관직에서 ‘그칠 줄 알고, 만족할 줄 안다.’라는 말을 실천하며 ‘處’를 단행한 것은 義理와 부합하지 않는 상황 때문이었다. 두 정계에서 처세하는 모습에는 차이를 보였으며, 오로지 義理를 관철했던 모습에서 유언호의 출처관을 ‘의리의 중시와 則止의 실천’이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 유언호는 작문에 있어 새로운 도전을 시도했다. 전인의 문장을 그대로 답습하는 것이 아닌 자신만의 독창적이고 개성적인 글쓰기를 주장하였다. 하지만, 여기에도 조건은 있었다. 바로 작가의 재량에 맞는 새로운 글을 창작하기 위해서는 가장 먼저 옛 문장이나 옛 문인, 그리고 변함없는 옛 경전을 철저히 통달해야 된다는 전제이다. 실학시대 연암그룹과 명맥이 이어지고 있는 부분이다. 많은 사람들과 교유를 유지하던 유언호는 일찍부터 견지하던 자신의 문장론을 주변 문인들에게 전파했을 가능성이 많으며, 당시 문풍 형성에도 어느 정도 영향력을 주었다고 판단할 수 있다.

영문 초록

There have been many academic approaches towards Chukjiheon Yu Eon-ho as a politician as he left records of an active political career during the political establishments of King Jeongjo and King Yeongjo. However, observations made of 『Yeonseok』, which is a collection of his literary works, clearly show that he also had a career as a person of literature. Prefaces are summaries of book contents. They include diverse opinions such as literary views, views on official posts, and academic views according to different book contents and characteristics. Therefore, their literary styles are more connotative and clearly display the viewpoints of writers regarding the relevant content. The preface of 『Yeonseok』 also embodies the political views, views on official posts, literary views, and views on syntax of Yu Eon-ho. Yu Eon-ho assisted both King Jeongjo and King Yeongjo. However, his conduct of life during their political reigns showed some differences. Yu Eon-ho lived his life with an emphasis on proper logic. He often demanded the resignation of Yeongjo, expressing opposition towards the fairness of Yeongjo, claiming that it is fairness that centers on his aides and because of this, he was banished twice. He had a teacher-student relationship with Jeongjo when he was crown prince and as he practiced logical fairness, he actively went into government service and demonstrated his abilities. However, he made the decisive action to resign from his post and reside in the countryside , practicing the words of ‘knowing enough to stop and knowing enough to be satisfied.’ Here, the views on official posts of Yu Eon-ho can be considered to place importance on proper logic and to be the fulfillment of quick wisdom. Yu Eon-ho always made new attempts with his writing. Instead of imitating his predecessors, he tried to write in his own unique and individual ways. However, there were conditions. They had to be modified according to writer discretion based on sentences of the past, literary people of the past, and steadfast scriptures of the past. This exists along the line of Beopgochangsin (creating new modeled after the old) of Yeonam Park Ji-won of the Silhak Era. Yu Eon-ho associated with many people and there is a high possibility that he spread his views on syntax to literary people who surrounded him and this can be viewed to have affected the development of literary styles at the time.
