芝園 姜世綸의 『北征錄』으로 본 北關의 人文地理

국문 초록

본 논문은 규장각에 소장되어 있는 『北征錄』 1冊에 대해 연구한 것이다. 『北征錄』은 芝園 姜世綸(1761~1842)이 61세인 1821년에 함경북도 鍾城지방의 府使로 임명을 받고 39일 동안 2,505리의 경로 중에 경험한 국토의 奇觀과 勝景을 체험하고 쓴 한시집이다. 그는 서울-경기-강원-함경도의 여정과정에서 견문한 정감을 『北征錄』에 담았고, 1822년 11월까지 1년여 간 그곳에서의 생활과 풍습들은 뒷부분의 『鍾山雜錄』으로 포착하였다. 姜世綸은 近畿 南人의 대표주자인 菊圃 姜樸(1690∼1742)의 손자로, 鄭宗魯의 門下에서 修學하며 退溪와 眉叟의 사상을 이어받았다. 그는 尙州지역을 중심으로 ‘秋水社’, ‘竹雨社’, ‘悅雲社’라는 詩社活動을 하며 南人 文壇에 많은 영향력을 끼쳤지만 지금까지 그의 생애와 문학작품 연구가 제대로 되지 않아 문학사에서 주목받지 못한 문인이다. 『北征錄』의 시들은 北關을 향해 가면서 목도한 奇觀들과 지역의 역사적 전고와 유래를 확인하면서 마치 한 폭의 그림을 보는듯한 山水詩로써 자연의 생생함을 보여준다. 강세륜은 북관민의 삶의 疾苦와 함께 歲時風俗에 주목하는가 하면, 북관민의 강인한 기질을 밝게 포착하여 함경도 지역의 세태와 풍속, 국토의 역사, 변방의 사적과 인물 등 北關의 人文地理를 다양하게 제시하고 있다. 비록 姜世綸이 북관민의 삶을 힘들게 하는 고질적인 사회적 병폐와 지역 문제를 해결할 수는 없었지만, 그들의 삶을 다양한 모습으로 담아내려는 자세와 시적 시선은 중요한 성취라 할 수 있다. 당시에 洪良浩와 같은 소론계 정치인들로 대표되는 작가들의 북관 기행이 주가 되었는데, 19세기 초 남인 문인으로서 北關의 鄕土와 風俗을 노래하였다는 점은 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is a study on a book titled Bukjeongrok stored in Gyujanggak. Bukjeongrok is a poetry written by Jiwon Kang Se-Ryun in Chinese characters in 1821 when he was 61 years-old, about unique sights and beautiful scenery of the country that he experienced for 39 days on the way to the place of assignment as supervisor of Jongsung, Hamkyungbukdo province, 1,000km away from Seoul. He put his personal impressions experienced on the journey from Seoul to Hamkyungdo via Gyeonggi and Gangwon, in this book ‘Bukjeongrok’ and added the life and customs of that place experienced for one year to Nov. 1822 in the book, Jongsanjaprok. Kang Se-ryun is a grandson of Kukpo Kang Park, a representative writer of Geunki-Namin literary group and studied under Jeong Jong-ro and inherited the ideology of Toegye and Misu. He did poetic activities such as Chusoosa, Jukoosa, Yeolwoonsa around Sangju area and influenced largely to the Namin literary group but remained as an unnoticed writer in the history of literature as his life and literary works were poorly studied till now. The poems of Bukjeongrok identify the unique sights seen heading toward Bukkwan and the historic records and origins of the regions and show the vividness of nature through a landscape poem as if looking at a picture. Kang Se-ryun would pay attention to the seasonal customs as well as the suffering of life of Bukkwan people and catch the strong temperament of Bukkwan people brightly and suggest the human geograpy of Bukkwan such as the social conditions and customs of Hamkyungdo region, the history of national land, the historic sites and persons on the border area, in various ways.. Even if Kang Se-ryun failed to solve the chronic social ills and regional problems that made the life of Bukkwan people hard, his attitude and poetic view of point to put their lives in various ways can be evaluated as important accomplishment. At that time, the trip to Bukkwan by writers who represent Soron group such as Hong Ryang-ho was so popular but Kang Se-ryun expressed the local cultures and customs of Bukkwan in poetry as a literary writer of Namin group in the beginning of 19th century, which can be said to be meaningful..
