국문 초록

19세기 말 갑오경장 이후로 20세기 전반 사이에 근대 이전 지식 지형의 골간을 이루고 있던 한문의 권위가 갈수록 쇠퇴하였다. 전통 학문을 학습 대상으로 삼아 이루어지던 교육도 더는 엘리트 교육에 적합한 기능을 하지 못하게 된 것이다. 근대식 학교가 증가하여 교육의 형식과 내용이 급격하게 변화하였고 한문을 기반으로 형성된 기존의 학문 영역과 지식 체계는 온전한 위상을 지킬 수 없었다. 그러나 한편으로는 학습자 층위가 크게 두터워진 점이 주목된다. 엘리트 지식인들이 한문 지식을 치열하게 학습하던 과거의 모습은 점차 사라졌지만, 학습자 층위가 저변으로 확장되고 두터워지면서 한문 학습이 대중화된 측면이 있다. 조선 후기 이후로 사회 저층에 있던 구성원들이 주체로 성장하여 교육 욕구가 커지면서 자연스럽게 한문 학습도 대중화되었다. 특히 강점기 이후로는 외세의 간섭을 비교적 적게 받는 학습 공간인 서당에서 공부하기를 원하는 수요가 적지 않았다. 이때 서당에서 학습한 내용 중에 한문 지식에 관한 것이 상당한 비중을 차지하였다. 이런 까닭에 이 시기에 여러 종의 『소학』과 유사한 서적이 출간되고 소비되었다. 본 연구는 이런 현상에 주목하여 계몽기 이후 간행된 『소학』의 양상을 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

From the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, the authority of traditional Chinese characters gradually declined. The education of learning traditional disciplines no longer functions properly. With the increase of modern schools, the form and contents of education have changed drastically. In addition, the academic domain and knowledge system formed on the basis of Chinese characters could not be maintained. On the other hand, however, more people wanted to learn. The intellectuals intense study of Chinese characters gradually disappeared. However, as more people want to learn, the public has learned Chinese. Since the late Joseon Dynasty, members of the lower classes of society have grown up and their educational needs have grown, so it has become natural to learn Chinese characters. In particular, there was a great demand for studying in places with little interference from foreign forces. At this time, Chinese characters were the major part of the contents learned in Seodang. Because of this, several 『Sohak 』 and similar books were published and consumed at this time. This study pays attention to this phenomenon and examines the pattern of 『Sohak』 published after Enlightenment.
