<玉匣夜話> 속 ‘허생 이야기’를 통해 본 조선 후기 야담과 소설의 관계

국문 초록

본고는 조선후기 야담과 소설의 관계를 수용미학적 측면에서 서사의 넘나듦으로 포착하면서, 그 사례로 <옥갑야화> 속 『허생』과 야담집 속 허생 고사류를 살펴본 것이다. 먼저 <옥갑야화>의 7번째 이야기로서 『허생』이 구연의 상황이나 발화의 방식, 그리고 이를 기록하는 형식과 주제로 미루어보아 본래 야담에 가까운 것이었음을 확인하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 작품이 傳이나 소설로 인식될 수 있었던 까닭은 작품을 구성하는 세 이야기가 이상적 선비로서 허생이라는 인물형상을 성공적으로 구현해냈기 때문이었다. 『허생』은 선비가 주체로서 세계에 대응해나가는 이야기가 되었으며, 실제로는 야담적인 존재성을 지니고 있었던 『허생』이 인물의 행적에 대한 포폄을 통해 가치를 전달하고자 했던 傳이나, 주체와 세계의 대결을 그린 소설로 이해될 수 있는 여지는 여기에 있었다. 그런데 이후 여러 야담집에서 산견되는 『허생』 고사류는 허생 을 다시 야담으로 전유하는 양상을 보여준다. 『허생』은 그 자체로 야담집에 전재되기도 하고, 작품을 구성하는 치부담․군도담․시사삼책 등이 분화되고 다른 화소와 결합하기도 하면서 다양한 서사 지향을 지닌 허생 고사를 만들어냈다. 이는 야담의 소설화라는 한 방향 외에도 수용미학적 측면에서 다양한 방향성을 확인할 수 있음을 의미한다. 즉, 『허생』의 사례를 통해 야담과 소설은 서술주체의 인식과 태도에 따라 달리 수용될 수 있는 것이었음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper captures the relationship between yadam and novels in the late Joseon Dynasty as a narrative cross over in terms of acceptance aesthetics. As an example, I looked at 『Heosaeng』 in and other Heosaeng stories in yadam anthologies. First of all, as the seventh story of Jade , 『Heosaeng』 was close to yadam by considering the situation and manner of speech, the form and theme of recording it. Nevertheless, this work could be recognized as a biography or a novel because the three stories that make up the work successfully embodied the figure of Heosaeng as the ideal scholar. “Heosaeng” became a story of scholar’s response to the world as a subject, and “Heosaeng”, which had an ambitious existence as yadam in real, could be understood as a novel or biography delivering values through the portrayal of the character s actions. However, other Heosaeng stories found in various yadam collections shows the differentiation of 『Heosaeng』 in . Heosaeng itself was rewrited in yadam collections, be-rich story, robber story, sisasamchaek which make up the work, were differentiated and combined with other stories, and it makes many Heosaeng stories of various directions. This means that in addition to one direction of the novelization of yadam, various directions can be confirmed in terms of acceptance aesthetics. In other words, it can be seen that yadam and novel could be accepted differently according to the perception and attitude of the writer.
