교회는 능력주의로부터 자유로운가?

국문 초록

21세기는 소유와 욕망으로 대변되는 자본주의 문명의 시대이다. 시장경제를 우선으로 하는 신자유주의적 자본주의는 사회적 불평등과 불공정을 일으키는 능력주의 신화를 통해 강화되고 있다. 마이클 샌델은 자신의 저서 『공정하다는 착각』에서 능력주의가 만들어낸 잘못된 신화를 비판한다. 그는 능력주의가 노력과 재능의 힘으로 능력 경쟁에서 성공한 이들과 실패한 이들 간의 포퓰리즘적 불만을 일으키는 원인이라고 비판한다. 또한 능력주의의 문제는 불평등을 치유하려 하지 않고, 불평등을 정당화하려한다는데 있다고 지적한다. 그는 이러한 능력주의 신화가 프로테스탄트 윤리를 토대로 발전한 근대 자본주의 정신에서 유래했다고 평가한다. 종교개혁의 기본원리인 구원의 무상성에 따라 구원의 확실성을 찾아가는 청교도 정신의 프로테스탄트 윤리가 직업 노동의 공리주의적 성향을 정당화했고, 이는 감사와 겸손의 윤리를 압도해버리는 성취의 윤리학으로 현대 세계의 능력주의적 생활 방식을 지탱해주었다고 비판한다. 이러한 사회적 능력주의는 신앙 공동체인 교회를 구성하는 원리인 성령의 은사, 곧 카리스마와는 질적으로 다르다. 사회적 능력주의는 개인의 사회적 상승에 집중하여 사회적 연대와 시민의식의 약화를 가져왔고 이기적 집단주의를 확대시킨다. 반면에 교회의 은사는 하느님으로부터 받은 선사된 자유로서, 공동체의 유익을 위하여, 곧 교회를 통하여 교회를 향해 발생해야 하는 신앙인의 공통 본성에 속한다. 과연 가톨릭 교회는 세속적 능력주의를 넘어 진정한 교회의 본질을 오늘날의 세상에 정착시킬 수 있을까? 가톨릭 교회는 인간의 능력이 하느님으로부터 받은 창조적 능력이며, 이는 노동의 신성함과 존엄성을 바탕으로 오늘날 신자유주의적 자본주의의 물결에 맞설 수 있는 역량을 가져야 한다고 가르친다. 교회가 제도적 역량을 사회 속에서 확장하는 데 집중하다보면 교회 역시 세속의 능력주의 신화에 빠져 구원 공동체로서의 교회의 정체성을 상실할 위험이 있다. 물량주의와 세속주의의 위기를 겪고 있는 한국 교회 역시 세속적 능력주의 신화로부터 벗어나는 영적 회심이 어느 때보다 필요하다고 본다.

영문 초록

The 21st century is the capitalism culture era represented by ‘having’ and ‘desire’. The new liberalistic capitalism prioritized the market economy and is strengthening through the meritocracy myth which raised social inequality and inequity. Michael Sandal criticized this wrong myth which is made by the meritocracy in his book “The tyranny of merit”. He criticized that the meritocracy is the reason of populist dissatisfaction between the winners who won in the ability competition by their efforts and talents, and the losers. And he pointed out that the problem of the meritocracy is not to cure the inequality but to justify it. He has assessed that this meritocracy myth was originated from modern capitalism spirit, which was formed and developed on the basis of Protestant ethics. The Protestant ethics, Puritanism, has searched for the certainty of salvation by aphasic of salvation, which is the basic principal of the Reformation, justified the utilitarianism tendency of occupational labor, and this supported modern meritocracy for the ability method of livelihood in modern era as an ethics of accomplishment, which overwhelmed the ethics of appreciation and humility. Such a social meritocracy is far different from Charisma, the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is the basic forming principle of the Church, as of the religious community. Social meritocracy focused on individual’s social upgrade, brought the weakness of relationship and citizenship, and expanded selfish collectivism. On the other hand, the Charisma, as a gifted freedom endowed from God, belongs to the community advantage, that is the common nature of believers that should be occurred by the Church and through the Church. Indeed, can the Catholic Church settle the true(authentic) nature of the Church over the secular meritocracy in this world? The Catholic Church teaches that human talent is the creative talent given by God, based on the sanctity and dignity of labor, and this should possess the ability which faces to modern new liberalistic capitalism stream. When the Church focuses on expanding the systematic ability in the society, she also falls into secular meritocracy myth, becomes in danger of losing the identity of the Church, the Salvation Community. The Korean Church, who faces the crisis of materialism and secularism, also needs the spiritual conversion than ever, getting out of the secular meritocracy myth.
