『파리외방전교회연보』를 통해 본 인천 지역 천주교의 모습

국문 초록

본 논문은 『파리외방전교회연보』에 나온 인천 지역 천주교의 모습에 대해 파악하였다. 파리외방전교회 본부는 선교 지역의 대목구장이 보낸 보고서를 바탕으로 『파리외방전교회연보』를 만들었다. 이 잡지에는 조선 천주교에 대한 보고서도 있으며 그 안에 인천 지역 천주교에 대한 이야기도 있다. 이 보고서를 통해 인천 지역 천주교에 대한 파리외방전교회 출신 주교들의 인식을 파악할 수 있다. 1889년부터 1933년까지 발행된 『파리외방전교회연보』에 나온 한국 관련보고서 중에서 인천 지역에 대한 언급이 나온 보고서는 35건이다. 대목구장 주교가 본부에 보낸 보고서 중 인천 지역 관련 보고는 당시 제물포 본당 주임 신부가 보낸 보고서를 직접 혹은 간접 인용하여 만든 것이다. 특히 강조할 필요가 있는 부분은 직접 인용하였다. 대목구장이 파리외방전교회 본부에 보낸 보고서 중 인천 지역 천주교에 대한 내용은 크게 4가지로 구분할 수 있다. 우선 교세 증감과 신자 수 보고이다. 그 다음으로 고아원, 무료 진료소 등 사회복지 사업에 대한 보고가 나온다. 이어서 학교 운영에 대한 보고가 나온다. 또한 본당 사목에서 나온 특이 사항과 고충에 대한 보고도 있다. 이 안에서 드러난 파리외방전교회 출신 주교들의 인천 지역 천주교에 대한 인식은 다음과 같다. 인천 지역이 개항장이며 상업 도시라는 특징을 가지고 있음을 주목하면서 그 세속적인 특징이 선교에 어려움을 줄 수도 있지만 국제적이며 개방적인 성격이 있다는 면에서 선교의 거점이 될 수 있다는 인식을 가지고 있었다. 사회복지 사업과 교육 사업이 그 운영에 어려움이 있음에도 불구하고 지역 선교에 있어 중요한 역할을 하고 있다고 인식하였다.

영문 초록

This thesis investigated on the Appearance of Incheon Catholic Church through Compte Rendu de la Société M.E.P. The Headquarter of la Société M.E.P. created Compte Rendu de la Société M.E.P. based on the report sent by the pastor of the mission area. In this magazine, there is a report on Catholicism in Korea, and there is also a story about Catholicism in the Incheon. Through this report, it is possible to understand the perception of french bishops toward Catholicism in the Incheon. Among the reports related to Korea in the magazine published from 1889 to 1933, 35 reports mention the Incheon Catholic. Among the reports sent to the headquarters by the bishop of vicariate apostolic, the reports related to the Incheon area were made by directly or indirectly citing the report sent by the priest at the time of the Chemulpo parish. In particular, the parts that need to be emphasized are directly quoted. The content of Catholicism in the Incheon can be divided into four major categories among the reports of the bishop of vicariate apostolic. First, it reports the increase in church membership and the number of believers. There are also reports on social welfare projects such as orphanages and free clinics. Finally, there are reports of specific issues and difficulties arising from parish pastoral care. French bishops showed the following perceptions of Catholicism in the Incheon. Noting that Incheon has the characteristics of a treaty port and a commercial city, the secular characteristics may make mission difficult, but in terms of its international and open character, it was recognized that it could be a base for missions. It was recognized that social welfare and education projects were playing an important role in local missions despite the difficulties in their operation.
