국문 초록

본 논문은 독도에 대한 역사ㆍ지리적 인식을 밝히기 위해서 마련되었다. 이 연구 목적을 성취하기 위하여, 본 논문에서는 울릉도와 독도에 대한 문헌 자료와 구전 자료, 그리고 지도들을 이용하였다. 그리하여 얻은 성과를 간단하게 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째 한국에서는 역사적으로 울릉도와 독도를 하나의 세트로 인식하여 왔는데, 조선 시대에 접어들면서 독도에 대한 실체를 별도로 인식하기에 이르렀다. 둘째 한국은 일찍부터 울릉도에 대한 지식을 가지고 있었으나, 일본은 상대적으로 울릉도와 독도에 대한 지식을 근대에 들어서 가지기 시작하였다. 셋째 한국은 임진왜란 이후부터 울릉도는 울릉도로, 독도는 우산도로 인식하였으며, 이들 두 섬에 대한 위치와 크기에 대한 정확한 지식을 가졌다. 한편 일본의 경우는 이들 두 섬의 명칭부터 혼란을 보이고 있었으므로, 정확한 지식을 가졌다고 보기 어렵다. 넷째 일본은 독도가 무주지였기 때문에 자국의 영토로 편입하였다고 주장하고 있지만, 무주지는 생활권을 함께 하는 곳에 속한다는 원칙에 따라, 울릉도에 속한 섬이었다고 보아야 한다는 것을 구명하였다.

영문 초록

This thesis examined to review a historic․geographic recognition on Dokdo island. For the purpose of the thesis, the materials were cited from literatures, oral transmissions, and maps concerning Ulreungdo and Dokdo island. The summary of the result for the research is as follows. First, historically, Ulreungdo or Dokdo island were recognized as one set of issue in Korea, however they were recognised as different reality of the issues from Chosun dynasty. Second, Korea have kept quite knowledge about Ulreungdo from early age but it was only from modern age in Japan to recognize the knowledge about the island. Third, Korea have recognized the Ulreungdo as Ulreungdo itself, and Dokdo as Usando differently from 7 year s war age between Korea and Japan in 1592, and have kept correct knowledge about the size and location of the islands. On the other hand, it was difficult for Japan to keep correct knowledge about the islands because they were confused on using the term in Japan. Forth, although Japan have still insisted that they have assigned the Dokdo to Japanese territory because the island was non-occupied, but it was examined that Dokdo should belong to Ulreungdo under the principle of non-occupied area shall belong to the living area .
