국문 초록

네오-토미스트인 쟈크 마리탱에게 있어서 인격(la personne)이란 인간을 지칭하는 가장최상의 개념이다. 왜냐하면 인격개념은 무한과 맞닿아 있는데, 이는 기독교적으로는 ‘신을닮음(imago dei)’이라는 의미가 내포되어 있기 때문이다. 마리탱에게 있어서 인격은 하나의 총체성이지만, 개인과 대립하는 의미로 쓰일 때는 ‘정신적으로 고려된 일체의 것’을지칭한다. 반면 물질적인 차원에서 고려된 일체의 것은 ‘개인’으로 간주하고 있다. 즉 하나의 동일한 개별자가 어떤 관점에서 고려되는 가에 따라서 개인도 되고 인격도 되는 것이다. 이러한 그의 관점은 개인주의와 전체주의에 의해 인간성이 상실되는 현대인으로 하여금 각성을 유도하고 ‘인격’을 실현하도록 하려는 목적이 있다. 마리탱에게 있어서 ‘인격’은 ‘인권의 원초적인 근거’가 된다. 왜냐하면 인격의 최종적인 목적이자 권리는 ‘영적인 삶(la vie spirituelle)’을 자유롭게 살아갈 수 있는 것이기 때문이다. 이런 이유로 인격실현은 공동체적 삶을 전제하고, 공동선의 추구를 요청하지만, 정치적 사회를 초월하는보다 상위적인 개념이다. 따라서 우리는 마리탱의 사상을 정당하게 ‘현대 토미즘의 인격주의’라고 부를 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

For the neo-thomist, Jacques Maritain, personality(la personne) is the best concept for human beings. This is because the concept of personality is in contact with infinity, because in the Christian sense, it means to resemble God (Imago Dei) . Thomas Aquinas considers personality as if it were an indivisible and inseverable totality, substance itself . Although it is true that the personality is a totality, when used in the opposite sense to the individual, it refers to ‘everything considered mentally’. On the other hand, anything considered at the material level is regarded as an individual . That is, one and the same individual is both “an individual” and “a personality” according to which point of view is considered. His point of view is to induce the awakening of modern people whose humanity is lost due to individualism and totalitarianism and to realize personality. For Maritain, ‘personality’ becomes ‘the original basis for human rights’. Because the ultimate purpose and right of the ‘personality’ is to be free to live the “spiritual life”. For this reason, the realization of personality presupposes a communal life and demands the pursuit of the common good, but the concept of personality is a higher concept that transcends political society. Therefore, we can rightly call the idea of Maritain, which places this concept of personality at the center of his thought and takes it as a reference for the most important actions, as “personalism of modern Thomism”.
