로제 쿠지네(Roger Cousinet)의 ‘소집단 자유학습’현재성과 시사점 탐구

국문 초록

이 연구는 1920년대 초등교사이자 장학사, 대학교수였던 프랑스의 교육전문가, 로제 쿠지네(Roger Cousinet)가 아동의 사회성을 기반으로 교실 수업의 변화를 추구하고, 그가 직접 실천했던 ‘소집단 자유학습’에 관한 현재적 의미와 교육적 시사점을 탐구하고자 한다. 요즈음 비대면 교육이 일상화되어가고, 개인주의 성향이 강화되는 시점에서 교육활동을 통해 사회성 발달을 교육적으로 더 지원할 필요가 있다. 특히 학령기 아동에게 적용해온 쿠지네의 교육철학과 방법은 한 세기가 지났지만 코로나19 창궐과 확산으로 인해 시의적절해졌다. 연구자는 문헌 중심으로 쿠지네의 교육관과 교육실천 사례를 알아보고, 쿠지네가 제안한 소집단 자유학습이 우리나라 현 교육상황에 어떠한 영향을 줄 수 있는지 설명하였다. 결론적으로 사회성 기반 아동심리학적 접근은 6명의 아동이 한 팀을 구성하여 활동이나 학습의 주제를 직접 선택하고, 선택한 과제 수행을 위해 팀별 노트나 전용 게시판을 활용하면서 활발한 상호작용과 토론을 해나간다. 교사는 개입을 최소화하는 대신에 지속인 관찰과 기록을 통해 집단의 역동성을 분석하고 팀에 적절히 개입한다. 지원자로서의 교사, 놀이를 통한 사회화, 아동 중심과 배움 중심으로 쿠지네의 소집단 자유학습의 현재성을 요약할 수 있다. 이런 특성은 집단 형성을 자발적으로 하고 구성원 간의 소통, 협력, 존중의 교육을 실천하는 21세기의 팀 기반 교육모델이 될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This research explored the present meaning and educational implications of Small Group Free Learning which was practiced by Roger Cousinet, a French educational specialist who was also an elementary school teacher, school supervisor, and college professor in the 1920s, as he pursued changes in learning process. As remote learning has become popular and individualistic characters have been developed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to support the development of social skills through educational activities. Cousinet s educational principles and methodology were applied to school-aged children and remain valid. This research looked at literature to discuss the educational views and practices of Cousinet and how his small group free learning methods could influence the current educational situation in our country. In sum, the pediatric psychological approach based on social skills involves a team of six children gathered to choose a topic and engage in active interactions and discussions using team notes and bulletin boards for the selected project. Teacher interventions are minimized, but the teacher s job is to observe and record, then to analyze the dynamics of group discussions and intervene in group activities when necessary. The present value of Cousinet s small group free learning can be summarized with emphasis on teachers as facilitators, socializing through play, children-centeredness and learning-centeredness. These characteristics would make small group free learning a team-based educational model for the 21st Century for spontaneous formation of group and education through communication, cooperation, and respect of members.
