욕망의 표현으로서 굿판의 존재

국문 초록

이 글은 글쓴이가 그동안 조사한 여러 굿중에서 몇 가지 사례를 ‘욕망 표현의 의미’ 로 살핀 글이다. 현재 서울 지역에서는 한 해 10만 건 이상의 굿이 열리는데 많은 사람들이 굿판에서 자신들의 내밀한 욕망을 드러낸다. 이 중에서 글쓴이가 주목한 것은 가족주의이다. 가족의 해체가 보이는 굿판에서 오히려 가족의 결속을 가져오기도 하고, 가족의 영역을 넓혀 부적절한 관계까지 용인한다. 혼인식을 하지 못하고 죽은 자식을 위해 여는 혼사굿은 가족에 대한 아픔의 감정이 그대로 드러나기도 하면서 새로운 가족을 결성하기도 한다. 개인의 소망을 이루기 위해 다양한 형태의 축원굿이 열리기도 하고, 굿판에 오지 않는 재가집은 굿의 전 과정을 촬영해 보내줄 것을 요청하여 무당들이 카메라를 보면서 굿을 하기도 한다. 사람들은 욕망을 가지고 살아간다. 욕망을 이루기 위해 많은 일을 벌이고 그를 향해 자신을 불사른다. 그런데 현실에서 이러한 욕망이 반드시 이루어진다는 보장은 없다. 더욱이 그 욕망이 가족주의에 정면으로 위배되는 것이라면 더더욱 안타까움은 커질 것이다. 이러한 때 사람들은 굿판을 찾고, 그 판에서 자신의 욕망을 거리낌 없이 드러낸다. 욕망이 이루어진다는 기대감보다도 그 욕망을 드러냈다는 자체가 굿판이 재가집에게 주는 효용이다. 감추기보다는 드러내기, 무시당하기보다는 인정받기, 자신의 욕망이 이렇게 인정받고 드러낼 수 있는 굿은 오늘도 지속되고 있다.

영문 초록

This article has examined one of the aspects of gut (shaman ritual), which is to express desires based on many cases of gut investigated so far. Today, Seoul sees more than 100,000 guts held every year where many people reveal their intimate desires. Among those desires, this article has paid particular attention to familism. A performance of gut that implies the destruction of family often results in rebuilding the family unity or expanding the scope of family and accepting inappropriate relationships. Honsa gut or wedding ritual for a deceased child without getting married reveals pain of losing a loved one and often establishes a new family relationship. Various forms of chukwon gut or celebratory ritual are performed in a bid to realize individual wishes, and in the jaga gut held in the absence of client, the shaman is requested to perform the ritual in front of a camera as the client want to see the entire process of gut. People live with desire in them. They engage in a lot of work or burn their passion to accomplish their desires. The reality, however, does not guarantee the fulfillment of such desires. Furthermore, any desires set against familyism will make things even more pathetic. It is when people start to seek gut performance and reveal their true desires in the process. It is the fact of revealing such desires rather than the expectation of fulfilling them that deliver utilities and benefits to the jaegajip or the client. The gutpan or shamanic ritual performance lives on today as it is where people can reveal instead of concealing their desires and have them recognized instead of being ignored.
