국문 초록

법운 이종익은 근현대를 대표하는 불교학자이자 불교대중화에 크게 기여한 인물이다. 그는 승려와 재가를 넘나들면서 일제강점기와 해방 이후 격변의 세월 동안 한국불교계 및 불교학계의 중심에 서서 뚜렷한 족적을 남겼지만, 그동안 그에 대한 학계의 본격적인 연구가 이루어지지 않고 있었다. 올해(2021년)는 한국불교학의 문호를 열었던 대표적인 석학 가운데 한 분인 이종익 사후 20주년이 되는 해로써, 그의 생애와 사상 및 불교계와 불교학계에 공헌한 업적을 조망해고자 하는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 그의 생애에 대해서는 일제강점기 탄생에서 출가 이전까지의 삶, 출가 이후 승려로서의 삶, 그리고 해방 이후 재가자로서의 삶 등으로 구분하여 주요한 내용을 살펴보았다. 그가 남긴 저술로는 소설과 학술논문이 있는데, 이에 대한 내용과 특징을 살펴보았다. 아울러 대표적인 불교 대중화 활동과 󰡔보조전서󰡕의 발간 및 보조사상 연구에 기여한 내용에 대하여 살펴보았다. 현대 한국의 불교학은 일제강점기에 출발하여 일본불교에 대항하여 한국불교의 정체성을 세우기 위한 노력과 함께 해방 이후 서양 사상의 유입에 따라 불교학의 현대화 작업을 거치면서 발전되어 왔다. 따라서 한국불교학 형성에 공헌한 주역들에 대한 연구는 미래 한국불교학이 나아가야 할 방향을 모색하는 토대가 된다는 점에서 중요하며, 본고에서 살핀 이종익에 관한 연구 또한 그 일환의 하나라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Beopwoon Lee Jong-ik was a Buddhist scholar who represented modern times and contributed greatly to the popularization of Buddhism. He has been at the center of Korean Buddhist and Buddhist academia as a monk and a lay Buddhist for the turbulent years since Japanese colonial era and liberation, but no full-fledged research has been conducted on him. This year (2021) marks the 20th anniversary of Lee Jong-ik‘s death. He is one of the leading scholars who opened the door to Korean Buddhism. This paper aims to view his life and his contribution to Buddhist community and Buddhist academia. The writer considered his life with the main contents in three periods, Japanese colonial era s life from birth, a monk’s life, and a lay Buddhist life after liberation. His writings include novels and academic papers. The writer examined the contents and characteristics of his writing. In addition, the writer looked at his representative Buddhist popularization activities and contributions to the publication of Bojo’s collection and the study on Bojo’s thought. Modern Korean Buddhism started in Japanese colonial era and tried to establish the identity of Korean Buddhism against Japanese Buddhism. Then it has developed since liberation through modernization of Buddhist studies following the introduction of Western ideas. Therefore, the study on the main contributors to the formation of Korean Buddhism is important as a foundation for the future direction of Korean Buddhism, and this study on Lee Jong-ik is also a part of it.
