원효의 화쟁방법 연구

국문 초록

원효(元曉, 617-686)의 대표적인 사상 중의 하나인 ‘화쟁사상’은 많은 연구자들로부터 관심을 받아왔다. 그 중에서도 ‘화쟁방법’ 분야는 20세기 중반부터 오늘날에 이르기까지 다양한 연구성과가 누적되어 있다. 본고는, 지금까지 선학들이 이루어놓은 연구성과를 겸허히 수용하면서, 그 위에서 원효가 대부분의 경우에 판단을 내린 ‘제설이 모두 옳다’는 경우에 한정하여 그의 화쟁방법을 탐구해 보고 있다. 첫째, ‘모두 옳다’는 판정이 무엇인지에 대해서는 하나의 예시를 들어서 살펴보았다. 오늘날 남아있는 『십문화쟁론』의 내용이 매우 불완전한 까닭에, 대신하여 『열반종요』에 실제로 실려 있는 소위 ‘화쟁사례’를 검토해 보았다. 여기에서 우리는 원효가 어떠한 주제에 대해서 논의하는 과정에서, 먼저 제설의 주장을 생생하게 제시하고, 나중에 반드시 자신의 판정과 그 이유를 제시하는 것을 알 수 있다. 둘째, ‘단일한 기준[一門]’이라는 것은 원효가 화쟁을 위해서 제시한 성전에 대한 해석이 ‘1셋트’라는 의미인데, 원효는 이것을 논쟁에 적용하여 화쟁한다. 이러한 경우에도 자세히 살펴보면 2가지 경우가 있는데, 하나는 제시된 성전의 문구에 대한 직접적인 해석의 결과를 가지고 화쟁하는 경우이고, 다른 하나는 제시된 성전의 문구를 전체적인 관점에서 해석한 결과를 가지고 화쟁하는 경우이다. 셋째, ‘복수의 기준[二門]’이라는 것은 원효가 화쟁을 위해서 제시한 성전에 대한 해석이 ‘2셋트’라는 의미인데, 원효는 이것을 논쟁에 적용하여 화쟁하였다. 이러한 경우에도 자세히 살펴보면 2가지 경우가 있는데, 하나는 성전의 저자가 가진 의도 등을 파악하여 그것으로 제설을 화쟁하는 경우이고, 다른 하나는 성전에 대한 원효 자신의 탁월한 이해를 바탕으로 제설을 화쟁하는 경우이다.

영문 초록

One of Wonhyo s representative theories, The Theory of Harmonization, has been drawn attention by many researchers. Among them, the field of The Method of Harmonization has accumulated a variety of research achievements from the mid-20th century. Accepting the research achievements so far, this article explores his method of harmonization only in the cases that Wonhyo judged in most cases, all theories are correct. First, we took an example of what the judgment of all theories are correct is. As the contents of the remaining Reconciliation of Disputes in Ten Aspects are incomplete today, instead, we reviewed the cases of harmonization that is contained in the Essentials of the Nirvana Sutra. Here we can see that in the course of discussion, Wonhyo first presents the claims of theories and later must present his own judgment and reasons. Second, Singular Standard means One Set of interpretation of the Buddhist scriptures that Wonhyo presented for harmonization, and he applies this method to the arguments. Here, there are two cases, one in which a direct interpretation of a given scripture is used by Wonhyo to harmonize the theories, and the other in which a given scripture interpreted from a holistic perspective is applied by Wonhyo to reconcile the theories. Third, the Plural Standard means Two Sets of interpretation of the Buddhist Scriptures that Wonhyo suggested for harmonization, and this method is applied to the arguments. Here again, there are two cases, one in which Wonhyo grasps the intentions of the scripture s author and applies to the arguments, and the other in which Wonhyo s own excellent understanding of the scripture is applied to the arguments.
