국문 초록

본 논문은 서울 흥천사 노전(爐殿)에 봉안된 3구의 석조불상 가운데 석조약사불상의 조성 목적과 도상 해석을 중심으로 고찰한 것이다. 흥천사 석조약사불상은 1829년에 조성된 사실과 순원왕후가 중심이 되어 제작한 왕실발원 불상임이 2016년 복장조사를 통해 밝혀졌다. 약사불상은 순조·효명세자·세손의 치병을 위해 조성된 것으로 추정된다. 약사불상과 함께 봉안된 아미타불상과 지장보살상은 1828년에 돌아가신 순원왕후의 모친 청양부부인 심씨와 1829년에 요절한 영온옹주의 극락왕생과 영가천도를 목적으로 발원했을 것으로 추정된다. 도상 해석의 측면에서 선정인(禪定印) 상태에서 구형(球形)의 보주(寶珠)를 들고 있는 조선후기 불상은 약사불상 또는 치성광불상이라는 견해가 있었지만, 흥천사 석조불상의 조성발원문 분석을 통해 약사불상의 도상임을 밝혔다는데 큰 의의가 있는 것으로 여겨진다.

영문 초록

There are three stone Buddhist statues in Heungcheonsa temple carved in late Joseon Dynasty of Korea. They are Medicine Buddha, Amitabha Buddha and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva statues, and enshrined in Nojeon. According to the investigation of Bokjang records in 2016 by author, it is certain that this Medicine Buddha statue was created with the wish of royal family in 1829 under the leadership of the Queen Sunwon. The Medicine Buddha statue was created to pray for the recovery of the royal families, including King Sunjo and Crown Prince Hyomyeong, from diseases. The interpretation of the Buddha statue created in the late Joseon Dynasty, which is depicted with a spherical object on his hand in a posture of Dhyana mudra, resting the left hand on top of the right hand and palms facing up, has been divided whether it is Medicine Buddha or Tejaprabha Buddha. It is believed to be of significance to reveal that the stone Buddha statue of Heungcheonsa temple is the icon of Medicine Buddha.
