국문 초록

본 논문은 스피박이 확장시킨 서발턴 과 그 재현의 어려움을 『포』의 프라이데이와 수전을 통해 살펴봄으로써 젠더와 인종이 만나는 지점과 그 만남이 처한 곤경에 대해 생각해보고자 한다. 더 나아가 프라이데이의 침묵 속에서 서발턴의 자기 재현의 긍정성을 찾아보려 한다. 쿳시는 다양한 타자의 관점에서 『로빈슨 크루소』를 다시 쓰고 있을 뿐 아니라, 『포』를 통해 글쓰기와 담론, 그리고 언어 그 자체가 지닌 억압성에 주목한다. 스피박이 『포』에서 크게 주목하는 부분이 “본연의 주변”(the margin as such)이 지닌 속성이다. 쿳시는 원하는 이야기를 쓸 수 없는 백인 여성 주체인 수전과 혀를 잃은 프라이데이를 서로 만나게 함으로써 ‘강요된 침묵’이라는 젠더와 인종의 교집합을 설정한다. 하지만 공유된 ‘차별’의 경험이 둘 사이의 연대감으로 곧장 이어지지는 않는다. 수전은 자신과 타자를 자신의 언어로 재현하고 싶어 하지만, 정작 프라이데이라는 토착민에게 말을 거는 방법도, 그의 고유한 표현들을 이해할 수도 없었다. 프라이데이라는 존재는 자신의 처지를 구체적인 언어로 표현하는 힘을 가지지 못하는 ‘서발턴’이다. 그는 끝까지 침묵하며, 자신에 대해 말할 수 없다. 그런데 그는 말할 수 없는 것일까, 다른 방식으로 말하는 것일까. 쿳시가 프라이데이를 통해 던지는 질문이다. 쿳시는 지배 담론으로도 수전이라는 대리자로도 재현될 수 없지만, 온몸으로 자신을 표현하고 있는 서발턴의 목소리를 다른 방식으로 들을 준비가 되어 있냐고 우리에게 질문한다.

영문 초록

This essay tries to explore how gender and race intersect and when aporia occurs in the process. It also examines the (im)possibility of the subaltern’s representation through Friday and Susan in Foe, appropriating Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. Published in 1986 by John Maxwell Coetzee, Foe is a post-colonial novel that re-examines western white male-centered gaze inherent in Robinson Crusoe from the female narrator’s point of view. While Coetzee gives his attention to the oppressiveness of writing, discourse, and language itself in the novel, Spivak conceptualizes the marginality of “the margin as such.” Susan can not write a story that she wants to write and Friday has lost his tongue. Their voices are forced to be silent by patriarchy and colonialism. By having the two subalterns encounter, Coetzee tries to explore the intersection between gender and race. However, shared experience of ‘discrimination’ does not lead directly to their solidarity. Even though Susan wants to represent herself and others in her own language, she doesn’t even know how to speak to Friday, let alone understanding his non-verbal expressions. The last paragraph of the novel implies that the subaltern may represent themselves with their whole bodies, not in the voices. Now we have to ask ourselves if we are ready to listen to their mute voices in another way.
