옌거링(嚴歌苓) 소설 《죄수 루옌스(陸犯焉識)》에 나타난 실존의식 연구

국문 초록

국내에서는 장이머우(張藝謀) 감독의 영화 <5일의 마중(归来, Coming Home)>으로 더욱 알려진 옌거링의 소설 《죄수 루옌스》는 20세기 중국의 현대사를 배경으로 주인공 루옌스의 굴곡진 인생사를 다루고 있다. 엘리트 지식인인 루옌스가 겪어온 인생의 각 단계는 역사 속 개인의 생활 경험과 맞닿아 있다. 때문에 소설은 지식인 서사, 가족 서사, 성장소설, 수용소 문학 등 다양한 범주에서 다루어지고 있기도 하다. 그러나 소설을 크게 관통하고 있는 일관된 주제의식은 인간의 실존 문제라고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 루옌스라는 인물을 중심으로 역사 속에서 한 개인의 선택과 그 선택에 따른 삶의 변화 양상을 살펴보고, 루옌스라는 인물이 어떻게 자신의 존재 의미를 찾아가는지 그 과정과 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 특히 기존의 역사 소재, 구체적으로는 문혁 소재 작품들이 역사를 다루는 방식과 달리, 《죄수 루옌스》는 특정 역사적, 정치적 사건에 대한 직접적인 폭로와 호소가 아닌 개인의 일상과 내적 체험에 더욱 집중하고 있다. 이는 집단적 기억과 서사에 가려졌던 개인의 기억을 불러오는 일인 동시에, 역사 속에서 ‘나’를 새롭게 발견하는 일에 다름 아니다. 《죄수 루옌스》가 감옥에서의 기록을 바탕으로 한다는 사실을 염두에 두었을 때, 소설의 전체 서사는 루옌스가 진정한 자기로 존재하기 위한 과정으로 집약된다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Further popularized in Korea through the director Zhang Yimou’s film Coming Home, Yan Geling’s novel The Criminal Lu Yanshi covers the vicissitudes of the protagonist Lu Yanshi’s life against the backdrop of Chinese modern history in the 20th century. Each life stage underwent by the elite intellect Lu Yanshi is in touch with the life experiences of individuals in history. As a result, the novel is also addressed in various categories, including intellectual narratives, family narratives, Bildungsroman, and concentration camp literature. However, the consistent thematic consciousness that largely penetrates the novel is the question of human existence. Thus, this paper examined an individual’s choices in history and the changing aspects of life according to those choices around the character of Lu Yanshi. Moreover, it aimed to explore the process and significance of how this character searches for the meaning of his existence. In particular, existing historical materials, specifically works with the subject matter of Cultural Revolution, deal with the direct exposure of and appeal for certain historical and political events whereas The Criminal Lu Yanshi is more focused on the everyday life and inner experiences of an individual. This conjures up the memory of an individual that was overshadowed by the collective memory and narrative while, concurrently, newly discovering ‘I’ within history. When bearing in mind that The Criminal Lu Yanshi is based on the records written in prison, it is fair to say that the entire narrative of the novel is integrated into the process for Lu Yanshi to exist as his true self.
