대학가(大學街)의 역사적 변동과 공간의 재현을 둘러싼 갈등

국문 초록

부산대학교 앞에는 ‘정문 앞 거리’라고 불리는 길이 있다. 이 거리는 부산대 정문부터 버스가 다니는 도로까지 70~80미터 길이의 길이다. 이곳은 도로를 막으면 제법 넓은 공간이 만들어져 한때 일 년에 수십 차례 문화공연이 개최되던 곳이었다. 그러나 2012년 하반기부터는 이곳에서 열리는 문화행사는 거의 사라지다시피 하고 있다. 정문 옆 대학 구내에 들어선 백화점이 통행을 위해 도로를 막고 집회나 공연을 하는 것을 반대하면서 갈등이 벌어졌기 때문이다. 이러한 갈등이 나타나게 되는 사회역사적 과정을 살펴보았다. 학생운동이 활발하던 시절 한국의 대학은 권력으로부터 자유로운 해방구였다. 학생 시위와 문화공연을 통해 ‘정문 앞 거리’는 역공간으로서의 기능과 의미를 지녔다. 그러나 대학의 상업화로 인해 백화점이 들어서면서 이러한 성격은 사라지면서 갈등이 시작되었다. 이 갈등은 세르토가 말하는 공간과 장소와의 긴장이며, 르페브르가 말하는 공간적 실천과 공간 재현의 충돌로 볼 수 있다. 아울러 여기에는 자본주의적 도시의 변화도 영향을 미쳤다. 도시가 확장되면서 대학가는 거대한 상업지역으로 성장하였고, 재개발로 인한 젠트리피케이션은 ‘정문 앞 거리’가 가진 역공간으로서 기능을 제한하고 상실시켰다. 그러나 도시공간을 둘러싼 모순은 갈등과 저항을 일으키는 잠재성을 가지고 있다.

영문 초록

There is ‘the street at front gate’ in Pusan National University. The street is 70~80 meters long. Dozens of cultural performances had been opened in the street blocked the road. From the second half of 2012, there has been few events in the street. It is due to the oppose of the department store beside the front gate. The strife appears through the social process of Korean modern history. When the student movement was active, the campus was liberation zone from the political power. During these periods ‘the street at front gate’ became a liminal space through political demonstrations and cultural performances. But the department store was built in the commercialization of university and ‘the street at front gate’ was lost the liminality. In that context the conflict has arisen. This strife is the tension between space and place what Certeau says. Also conflict between spatial practice and representation of space what Lefebvre calls. At the same time, the change of capitalist city influence on the strife. The university town has been grown a massive commercial area with urban expansion. ‘The street at front gate’ lost the liminality by the gentrification of residential redevelopment around the campus. Contradiction of urban space still have potential of resistance and conflict.
