국문 초록

이 논문은 18세기 연행록과 서학의 관계를 이기지와 서호수를 중심으로 이해하고자 하는 것을 목적으로 한다.연행은 조선 지식인 사회의 일종의 세계화의 체험이었고,연행록은 다른 세상과 소통하는 교과서이었다.특히 북경 천주당 방문과 서양 선교사와의 만남은 전혀 낯선 문화를 경험하는 자리였다.이것은 ‘동쪽 끝과 서쪽 끝의사람들이 북경 천주당에서 만났다는 것이고 우리의 인식의 플랫폼 전환이 가능하다는 것을 제시하고 있다.연행사의 북경 천주당 방문기는 조선 지식인들이 서학을 직접 접할 수 있는 통로를 보여주며,서학을 대하는 태도를 읽을 수 있는 자료이다.여기서 대상으로 삼은 것은 18세기 전반기 연행록 가운데 하나인 이기지의 『일암연기』와18세기 후반기의 연행록 가운데 하나인 서호수의 『열하기유』이다.이기지의 『일암연기』에는 그가 북경 천주당을 방문하면서 서양 선교사와의 교유를 통해 서학에 다가서는 모습이 담겨져 있다면,서호수의 『열하기유』에서는 북경 천주당의 선교사들과 대화에서 조선의 서학 수준을 당당하게 표현하는 모습을 볼 수 있다.이기지는 서양과학 뿐만 아니라 서양 종교에 대해 이야기하는 데 주저하지 않았다.서호수의 경우는서양 선교사와의 만남을 원숙하면서도 대등하게 이끌어 나갔고 기록으로 남겼다.이것을 거칠게 표현하면 18세기 연행록을 통해 조선 서학의 처음과 마지막을 함께 보려고 시도한 것이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This research aims to understand the relationship between the 18th century 『Yeon-haeng-rok』 and the Western Studies, focusing on Gee-jee Lee and Ho-soo Seo. Yeon-haeng was a kind of globalization experience in the Chosun intellectual society, and 『Yeon-haeng-rok』 was a textbook that communicates with other worlds. In particular, visiting the Catholic Church in Beijing and meeting with Western missionaries were places to experience a completely unfamiliar culture. This suggests that “people from the eastern and western ends met at the Beijing Catholic Church and that the platform of people’s perception in Chosun can be changed.’ The visit to the Beijing Catholic Church shows the passage through which Korean intellectuals can directly access to the Western Studies, and is a material that allows them to read their attitude toward it. The targets here are Geejee Lee’s 『Il-am-yeon-gi』, one of the records of the first half of the 18th century, and Ho-soo Seo’s 『Yeol-ha-gi-yu,』 in the latter half of the 18th century. Gee-jee Lee’s 『Il-am-yeon-gi』 contains the appearance of approaching to the Western Studies through exchanges with Western missionaries while visiting Beijing Catholic Church; whereas, Ho-soo Seo’s 『Yeol-ha-gi-yu,』 showed that Seo had bold conversation about the Western Studies in the dialogue with the missionaries of the Beijing Catholic Church. Thus, this study examines the relationship between 『Yeon-haeng-rok』 and the Western Studies.
