국문 초록

이 논문은 주요 선진국들의 수출입의 가격 및 소득탄력성의 상대적 크기를 추정하여 무역에서의 가격과 소득변화의 상대적 중요성을 평가하려 한다. 선형회귀분석의 결과, 선진국들의 무역에서 3가지 특징적 형태가 발견되어진다. 첫째, 상대가격의 변화가 무역에 미치는효과는 적은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 소득변화가 가격변화에 비해 무역에 대해 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 실증추정의 정책적 함의로는 평가하락보다는 비가격경쟁력의 향상이 무역수지개선을 위한 효과적인 수단이라는 것을 나타내고 있다. 셋째, 선진국 간의 무역불균형과 불균형에 대한 긴축조정의 본원적 경향이 존재하며, 그로 인하여 선진국 전체의 경제성장에 대한 하락압력이 존재한다. 이러한 무역불균형과 긴축조정에 대한본원적 성향은, 현재 진행 중인 세계경제위기의 극복과 아울러, 선진국들이 해결해야 할 지난한 과제를 던지고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper tries to evaluate the relative importance of price changes to income changes in a nation’s trade by examining the relative sizes of price and income elasticities of exports and imports of major industrial countries. After applying linear regression estimation (autoregressive distributed lagged model), the paper finds three distinctive features of the trade of industrial countries. First, relative price changes have little effect on trade. Secondly, income changes have a dominant effect on trade over price changes. The policy implication of the estimation results is that currency depreciation cannot be an effective measure to improve trade performance of those countries. The improvement in a country’s non-price competition may be the only solution to better trade performance. Thirdly, there is an intrinsic tendency of both a persistent trade imbalance among industrial countries and deflationary adjustment to trade imbalance, which in turn exerts a heavy downward pressure on economic growth of the whole industrial world. The tendency of both trade imbalance and consequent deflationary pressure of economic growth may put forward one of most challenging tasks that the industrial world has to get through together with overcoming the current crisis of the world economy.
