국문 초록

1913년 개성의 인삼경작자를 비롯한 주요 자산가들은 상품의 판매와 위탁판매, 창고업, 대금업 경영을 목표로 개성사를 창립하였다. 그리하여 당대 최고의 글로벌대기업이던 미쓰이물산, 스탠다드석유, 영미연초회사 등과 특약점 계약을 맺어 일본산 면포와 미국산 석유, 담배 같은 신상품들을 수입 판매하였다. 그중 가장 큰 비중을 점한 것은 미쓰이물산을 통하여 수입한 일본산 면포였다. 이 글은 개성의 자산가들이 그곳의 오랜 상업적 전통과 20세기 초의 새로운 환경 속에서 개성사를 설립한 과정을 살펴보고 특히 이들이 당대 첨단의 글로벌대기업들과 어떤 조건의 특약점 계약을 체결하였던가를 개성사의 장부를 통해서 검토한 것이다. 20세기 초 한국은 ‘특약점의 시대’라 할 만큼 특약점 개설이 붐을 이루었는데 막상 그간에는 그에 관하여 큰 관심을 기울이지 못하였다. 아울러 1910년대 한국은 농업, 공업보다 상대적으로 상업이 활기를 띠었는데 정작 이 시기 한국인 상업회사의 설립과 경영을 그들의 장부를 통하여 꼼꼼하게 살핀 연구는 거의 없었다. 그 점에서 이 글의 연구사적 의의를 찾고 싶다.

영문 초록

The Gaeseong-Sa Company was established in 1913 by ginseng growers and wealthy individuals in Gaesong for the purpose of commodity sale and consignment, warehousing, and moneylending. In the 1910’s, the Gaeseong-Sa entered into agency agreements with global companies like the Mitsui Trading Co., the Standard Oil Co., and the British-American Tobacco Co., and imported new products like cotton cloth, oil products, and cigarettes. This paper focuses on how the Gaeseong-Sa had been established and what the contents of the agency agreements were with those firms. In the early 1900’s, Korea had witnessed a boom in agency agreements to the extent that we may call it ‘the Age of Agencies’. However, not much attention has been paid to the agencies of this period and their historical significance. Furthermore, meticulous researches on the establishment and management of commercial companies in Korea during this period that delves into their ledgers are, if any, rare, even though commerce was relatively more flourishing than agriculture and manufacture in the 1910’s in Korea. This paper tries to bridge this gap in research.
