Sentential Particles and Null Subjects in Korean

영문 초록

It has been claimed that there exists correlation between the occurrence of the null subject in the embedded clauses and such sentential particles as la, and ca in Korean. Recently, Pak et al (2006, 2008a and 2008b) and Park (2009) add another sentential particle, ma to afore-mentioned sentential particles in an attempt to attribute the licensing of the null subject to the occurrence of these particles in the embedded clauses in Korean and to group them together under the name of jussive clauses. The purpose of this paper is first to review their claims, then to reanalyze the data and finally to make a new proposal. First, it will be shown that ma behaves differently from the other two particles and that its replacive keyssta shares common properties with the other particles. On the basis of the fact that the occurrence of the null subject relies on the properties of C and T as well as those of the matrix verb, I make a proposal that the null subject is licensed via AGREE between its phi-features and those of C+T complex instead of by an independent functional category J(ussive).
