영문 초록

Chomsky (2001, 2005) claims that derivation of an expression proceeds cyclically by the phase, arguing for the phasehood of vP and CP on the ground that they are propositional , hence relatively independent at the interfaces. In this article we generally agree with phases but defining phases as propositional is problematic in that propositional is a semantic notion, which cannot be applied to syntax. Assuming that verbs undergo head movement in the syntax, we define phasehood by hosting the raised verb of a lower verb through head movement. Thus vP and CP are defined as phases due to fact that V-to-v and T-to-C occurs. It is concluded that if head movement occurs on derivations, CHL recognizes that there is no more extending on derivations and then proceeds the corresponding phases to be shipped to Spell-Out. Thus head movements are considered to be a sort of sign to CHL that phases are completed and should be shipped to Spell-Out.
