국문 초록

1800년대 중반 캐나다 노바스코샤의 항구도시 핼리팩스 외곽에 흑인공동체 아프릭빌이 들어섰다. 북미에서 가장 오래된 흑인공동체 아프릭빌은 1960년대 중반 운명의 전환점을 맞이한다. 시 당국이 이곳에 시립 쓰레기장을 유치하면서, 상하수도 등 지역의 기본 편의시설 제공이 중단된다. 악취와 들쥐로 가득한 슬럼으로 전락한 아프릭빌은 1964년부터 철거되기 시작하여, 결국 북미에서 가장 오래된 흑인공동체는 1970년에 역사 속으로 사라졌다. 노바스코샤 출신 극작가 조지 보이드(George Elroy Boyd)의 극 『봉헌된 땅』(Consecrated Ground, 1999)은 당시 아프릭빌 철거와 주민 400여 명의 이주 문제를 다룬다. 극은 소멸 위기에 놓인 삶의 터전, 인간의 존엄성, 역사와 전통을 지켜내려는 아프릭빌 주민의 눈물겨운 ‘인간의 논리’와 투쟁을 이야기한다. 극은 표면적으로 아프릭빌 철거를 둘러싼 기득권층의 인종적·경제적·정치적 이해와 갈등이 혼잡하게 얽힌 양상을 그린다. 한편 극은 갈등의 저변을 관통하는 생태라는 보다 근원적인 문제를 건드린다. 아프릭빌이 번영하던 경제 단위이자 자족적인 인간 생태계에서 슬럼으로 추락하고 역사 속으로 사라지는 일련의 과정은 쓰레기장 설치, 식수 오염, 들쥐 창궐, 공동체 소멸로 대변되는 인간과 환경의 관계 맺기, 즉 ‘생태’ 이슈가 맞물려 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

In the mid-1800s, a black community Africville was established on the outskirts of Halifax, a port city in Nova Scotia, Canada. Africville, the oldest black community in North America, faced a change in fate in the mid-1960s. The city authorities decided to built a municipal dump in Africville, and accordingly the basic facilities of water and sewage system were stopped. Africville fell into an slum infested with rats, began to be demolished in 1964, and eventually disappeared into history in 1970. Nova Scotia playwright George Boyd’s play Consecrated Ground (1999) deals with the demolition of Africville and the migration of 400 residents. The play tells about the Africville people’s tearful ‘human logic’ and struggles to preserve their place, history and heritage from extinction. On the surface, the play depicts the entangled racial, economic, and political interests surrounding the demolition of Africkville. In a dipper level, it touches on a more fundamental issue of ecology. The historical moment of Africville’s disappearance is intertwined with human ecology, or the relationship between humans and environment, represented by garbage dumps, lack of drinking water, and outbreaks of wild rats as depicted in the play.
