국문 초록

해외직접투자를 문화거리 차원에서 설명력을 확인하려는 노력은 연구결과의 일관성이 확보되지 않으면서 문화거리 역설에 직면하게 되었다. 본 연구는 해외직접투자와 같이 역동적인 구조 분석에서 정태적 문화지표가 보유한 한계를 인지하고 민유주아나 & 양오석(2017)의 홉스테드 문화척도 갱신 방식을 바탕으로 문화거리가 유발시키는 해외직접투자의 양상을 양자간 패널로 분석하여 제기된 문화거리 역설의 기저를 파악하고자 하였다. 분석결과 일반적으로 투자국은 위험을 대상국에게 외부화하지만(해외직접투자의 외면적 불확실성 투영 동기), 급격한 개인주의를 경험한 국가는 투자대상국을 내부화하여 위험을 중립화(내면적 불확실성 해소 동기)한다는 결론에 도달하였다. 이로서 개인주의 변화의 급진성 정도가 혼합된 국제사회에서 선택적 국가 분석이 문화거리의 역설을 유도한다는 사실을 발견하여 학술적 의의를 더한다.

영문 초록

The Efforts to confirm the explanatory power of cultural distance on the foreign direct investment faced the “cultural distance paradox” that shows inconsistency on the concerning results. This study recognizes the limits trying to apply static cultural index on the dynamic structure as foreign direct investment. therefore I applied Min & Yang(2017)’s research to annually update Hofstede Cultural Index and tried to understand where the cultural paradox came from by analyzing bilateral FDI on updated cultural distance, named relative cultural distance. As a result of the analysis, it was concluded that the general investing countries externalizes the risk to the partner countries (the FDI’s motive for projecting the uncertainty externally). On the other hand, the countries that experienced rapid individualism changes internalize the partner countries to neutralize the risk (the FDI’s motive for relieving uncertainty internally). This conclusion adds academic significance by discovering that selection bias among counties vary changes in Individualism might cause cultural distance paradox.
