근대주의 그리고 민족과 민족주의의 기원

국문 초록

근대주의 시각에는 다양한 이론과 주장들이 있지만 이들을 근대주의라는 하나의 범주로 묶어서 다른 시각들과 차별화할 수 있는 가장 중요한 점은 민족과 민족주의를 근대적 현상으로 파악한다는 점이다. 그러나 또한 근대주의에는 민족과 민족주의의 기원으로 작용하는 근대성의 내용에 대해서는 다양한 주장들이 경합하고 있다. 이 연구는 민족과 민족주의의 기원에 대한 근대주의 시각의 다양한 이론과 주장들을 살펴보고 근대주의 시각에 내재되어 있는 문제점들을 이론적 차원에서 비판적으로 고찰하는 것이 목적이다. 근대주의는 민족을 영토국가에서 주권을 가진 시민으로 이루어진 공동체로 개념화한다. 이러한 개념은 근대주의가 민족과 민족주의를 근대적 현상으로 간주하고 있음을 보여준다. 민족과 민족주의가 등장하는 근대적 맥락을 이 연구에서는 문화적 기원, 정치적 기원 그리고 경제적 기원으로 나누어서 고찰했다. 문화적 기원으로는 산업화와 자본주의가 요구하는 문화적 동질성과 통합, 정치적 기원으로는 근대국가에 필요한 정치적 통합과 정당성 그리고 경제적 기원으로는 자본주의에 필연적인 불균등 발전이 있다. 근대주의에 대한 많은 비판이 있지만 민족과 민족주의의 기원과 관련해서 이론적 차원에서는 근대주의의 민족 개념이 분석과 서술에 적합하지 못해서 다양한 기원을 제시하기에 부적절하다. 그리고 근대주의의 기능주의적 접근은 민족과 민족주의의 기능적 역할에 주목한 나머지 민족과 민족주의 자체에 대한 고찰이 불충분하고 또한 인과관계가 불분명해서 근대성과 민족주의의 선후관계가 모호한 채로 있음에도 민족주의를 결과로 간주하는 목적론적 오류가 스며들어 있다. 역사적 공동체로서의 민족은 근대주의의 논리에 의하면 근대성 특히 민족국가의 향방에 따라서 지속될지 쇠퇴할 것인지 달라질 것이다.

영문 초록

Although there are a variety of theories and arguments in the modernist perspective, they can be classified under the category of modernism and differentiated from the other perspectives because they consider the nation and nationalism as modern phenomena. However in the modernist perspective, many theories and arguments are also competing about the contents of modernity which work on the origin of nation and nationalism. This article aims to investigate modernist theories on the origin of the nation and nationalism and criticize some theoretical problems. According to the modernism, the nation is conceptualized as a community of citizens with the sovereignty in the territorial state. This conceptualization shows that the modernism sees the nation and nationalism as a modern phenomenon. The origin which generate the nation and nationalism can be differentiated into three categories; cultural origin as cultural homogenization and integration which the capitalism and industrialization need, political origin as political integration and legitimation which the modern state needs and economical origin as the uneven development which is inevitable to the capitalism. On the theoretical level, two of many criticisms can be presented: one is that the modernist conceptualization of nation is incongruent to analyze and describe various origins of nation: another is that its functionalist approach seeking the functional roles of the nationalism neglects the proper nation and nationalism and tends to fall into a teleological error. According to the modernist perspective, it can be said that the future of the nationalism, that is, its decline or persistence depends on the drift of the modernity, notably that oh the modern state.
