국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 『토지』의 4~5부에 드러난 사회사상을 중심으로 생명사상과 호혜원리, 자본주의와 시장경제 비판, 일본 국가의 실패와 시민사회 부재의 관계를 고찰하는 것이다. 그동안 『토지』 연구는 다양한 관점으로 진행되어왔지만 4~5부에 대한 연구는 미약한 편이었다. 그 주요한 이유는 1~3부에 비해 4~5부가 서사적 맥락보다는 많은 사상가와 다양한 역사적 사건이 호출되어 사상 논쟁에 치중했다는 점 때문이다. 그러나4~5부에 드러나는 사회사상은 지식인의 사상 논쟁으로만 한정된 것이 아니라, 『토지』가 궁극적으로 지향하고 있는 사회사상의 정신과 호혜원리와 깊은 관련이 있다. 『토지』의 사회사상은 동아시아 근대에 나타나는 시장의 강제성과 전쟁 국가의 폭력성을 비판하며 공동사회의 자유와 연대를 지향한다는 점에서 한국문학사에서 독보적이다. 호혜원리를 추구하는 공중(公衆)의 시민사회가 가치 타락을 불러오는 시장의 물질성과 국가의 물리적 폭력성을 통제할 장치인 것이다. 그러므로 『토지』의 사회사상은 이윤추구, 지배, 경쟁의 원리가 아닌 가치, 협력, 자유의 정신을 추구하며 이성중심주의, 인간 중심주의가 낳은 근대문명의 부정적 측면을 성찰하게 한다. 또한 비애에 기반을 둔 생명의 공동체는 근대 자본주의가 낳은 개인주의, 경쟁과 지배, 욕망을 제어하는 데 철학적 원리를 제공한다.

영문 초록

This article focuses on the social ideology revealed in Parts IV and V of Toji to examine the relationships between the life ideology and the principle of Reciprocity, criticism of capitalism and market economy, and the failure of the Japanese state and absence of civil society. Although research has examined Toji from various perspectives, the extant research focusing on Parts IV and V. The primary reason is that compared with Parts I, II, and III, Parts IV and V focused on ideological debates by inviting more thinkers as well as various historical events, instead of narrative context. However, the social ideology revealed in Parts IV and Vis not only limited to ideological debates, but is also deeply related to the spirit of social ideology and principle of Reciprocity that Toji is ultimately aimed toward. The social ideology of Toji is unique in the history of Korean literature because it criticizes the coercion of the market and violence in the warring state in Modern East Asia, and aims for freedom and solidarity in the community. It is a device used to control the materiality of the market and the physical violence of the state wherein civil society pursues the principle of Reciprocity. Therefore, the social ideology regarding Toji pursues moral values, cooperation, and the spirit of freedom, instead of the principle of profit-seeking, domination, and competition, thus allowing us to reflect on the negative aspects of modern civilization created by rationalism and anthropocentrism. In addition, a community based on sorrow provides a philosophical principle for controlling individualism, competition, and domination, as well as the desires created by modern capitalism.
