국문 초록

한국 광역단체장 선거에서의 투표 선택에 관하여 기존 연구들은 전국 요인들이 주요한 영향을 미친다는 것을 밝혀낸 반면에 지방 요인들의 영향에 관한 연구는 많지 않다. 본 연구의 목적은 한국 광역단체장 선거에서의 투표 결정에 있어서 전국 요인들과 지방 요인들이 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 포괄적으로 분석하는 것이다. 본 연구는 한국 광역단체장 선거 유권자들은 후보자 선택을 함에 있어 전국 요인들과 지방 요인들 모두 고려하며, 전국 요인들이 유권자의 최종 결정에 보다 큰 영향력을 발휘한다고 주장한다. 본 연구의 분석 결과는 한국 광역단체장 선거 유권자들은 전국 이슈와 지방 이슈를 평가함에 있어 두 가지의 다른 평가 기준을 가지고 있으며, 이러한 특성은 지방 정부의 자율성과 책임이 증가한다면 지방 요인들의 영향력이 증대될 가능성이 있음을 시사해 준다.

영문 초록

Previous study has found that national factors primarily affect vote choice in Korean gubernatorial elections while there have been a handful of studies on the influence of local factors. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively examine whether both national and local factors influence vote decisions in Korean gubernatorial elections. This study argues that both national and local factors affect vote choice in Korean gubernatorial elections in a way that voters put both factors in their calculations and national factors exert more influence than local factors for their final choice on election day. The results of the analysis suggest that Korean gubernatorial election voters have two different sets of evaluation for national matters and local matters. Employing such separate sets of assessment suggests the possibility that local factors could have more significant influence on vote decisions if local governments become more autonomous and take more accountability for local matters.
