영문 초록

This paper is concerned with identifying whether there is a border effect in migration between Seoul and the rest of Seoul within the capital region of Korea, estimating gravity-typed migration models. The border effect is defined as an unexplainable reduction in spatial mobility after quantitatively controlling effects of economic and geographical factors on interregional migration. The spatial migration is estimated with the existence of Seoul’s borderline, incomes, employment opportunities, and population structure in terms of the age cohort. This paper finds that there is a positive border effect of Seoul to substantially decrease the number of migrants. In addition, high levels of regional income and employment opportunities with low housing costs result in the reduction in population mobility. Finally, the border effects and other variables are depending on the age cohort.
