이노우에 엔료의 진여불교론 전개에 대하여

국문 초록

이노우에 엔료는 폐불훼석의 탄압을 겪은 근대기 일본의 불교계가 새롭게 회생하는데 큰 기여를 한 인물이다. 160여권에 이르는 방대한 저술로 다양한 학문적 영역을 개척한 그는 특히 불교의 분야에서도 많은 저술로 불교의 위상을 공고히 하였다. 불교와 관련된 그의 행적을 살펴보면 그는 도쿄대학에서 서양철학의 연구를 통해 불교의 가치를 재발견하고, 진리탐구의 입장에서 서양의 기독교를 비판하고 나아가 불교의 역사를 전종파적 입장에서 체계화 시키고자 하였다. 특히 그가 서양철학의 연구를 통해 불교의 가치를 재발견한 데에는 『대승기신론』에 근거하는 진여의 개념이 주요한 역할을 하였다. 곧 서양철학의 최고봉의 입장으로서 물심동체론의 사상적 입장은 불교의 천태사상에 근거하는 진여즉만법의 입장과 상통하는 것으로, 여기에서 진여는 일체만물의 근거 내지 본성으로서 불가지적인 면을 내포하고 있다. 진여의 개념으로 불교의 진리를 확신한 엔료는 진여의 개념을 후대 자신의 불교체계 속에서도 중요한 개념으로 간주하고 그 교학적 논리를 전개하고 있다. 특히 엔료는 불교의 모든 종파에서 강조하는 핵심개념이 진여 개념이 변용되어 나타난 것이라고까지 말하고 있다. 필자는 이러한 진여에 대한 엔료의 입장을 ‘진여불교론’이라 명명하고, 본고를 통해 그의 저술 속에 나타난 진여의 개념의 역사적 전개를 고찰, 정리하였다.

영문 초록

This article Inoue Enryo was a person who made a great contribution to the renewal of the Buddhist world in early modern Japan, which was subjected to the suppression and the destruction of Buddhism. He pioneered a variety of academic fields with over 160 books, especially in the field of Buddhism, and solidified the status of Buddhism with many writings. Looking at his conduct related to Buddhism, he attempted to rediscover the value of Buddhism through the study of Western philosophy at the University of Tokyo, criticize Western Christianity from the standpoint of seeking truth, and further systematize the history of Buddhism from the standpoint of doctrinal unification. In particular, in his rediscovery of the values of Buddhism through the study of Western philosophy, the concept of Tathatā, based on the theology of the Dai-seung-gi-sin-ron, played a major role. In other words, the ideological position of the theory of the Phenomenon and Substance as the highest point of Western philosophy is the same as the position of the objects and Tathatā based on the Cheon-tae ideology of Buddhism. Here, Tathatā is the basis or nature of all things, and implies the unknowable aspect that we cannot know by human thoughts. Enryo, who was convinced of the truth of Buddhism with the concept of Tathatā, regards the concept of Tathatā as an important concept in his later Buddhist writings and develops its dogmatic logic. In particular, Enryo even says that the core concept emphasized in all sects of Buddhism was a change of the concept of Tathatā. The author named Enryo s position on Tathatā as “Theory of Tathatā Buddhism,” and through this paper, I reviewed and summarized the historical development of the concept of Tathatā in his writings.
