매천 황현의 당대사 인식을 둘러싼 논의

영문 초록

This study examines several issues about the controversy for recognition about Contemporary History by Hwang hyun(黃玹, 1855~1919). Main discussion reference for this study is his writing Maechunyarok(梅泉野錄). This book is not actual history book, but it has high material value about history of invasion of Japanese empire and falling of nation. Hwang hyun was a traditional student of confucianism, and confucian value organized basement of his ideology and thought. However, he was not just burying in thinking of Wejungchuksa, and he exclaimed the enlightenment. His enlightenment was medieval order reinforcement of centralization by monarchy, and this was different from westernization and civilization by people who favored enlightenment. It was discussion that showed his view of the world of Hwaegwan. Although his thinking of enlightenment has partial progressive section, but his evaluation like person of aiming modern time is excessive evaluation. He did not exclaim any invasion or independence for Chung Dynasty, which was different view for Japan and Russia. However, he sharply understood political invasion and essense of economic invasion by Japan. Recognition for Russia was not friendly as that for Chung Dynasty, but it was less critical than recognition for Japan. Recognition for Western civilization was not exhaustive, but he showed negative recognition for Western civilization through description of western study. However, he was sure that subject of invasion on Korea was Japan, and his description for Western civilization became objective after 1904. After 1907, Mae-chun showed an interest about resistance fight and relationship with resistance because Japanese invasion became more obvious. He also participated on skill training and enlightenment activity. With these factors, we know that he was not burying in specific ideology and methodology. He mainly focused on recovery of nation rights, and he worked hard for this. However, he suicided to sacrifice himself for his country to perform his duty as a learned man because of the fall of nation. Therefore, Hwang hyun should be evaluated as person who aggressively resisted Japanese invasion with using resistance fight, enlightenment activity, fight for heroic and noble mind, which are ethnic activity in the last of this nation.
